Manchester United have made an improved £70m bid for Leicester City centre-back Harry Maguire as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continues his summer spending spree, according to Sky Sports.
Solskjaer has wasted no time strengthening his squad as United have already snapped-up highly-rated winger Daniel James from Swansea while right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka completed his big-money move from Crystal Palace at the weekend.
However, Solskjaer is reportedly keen to sign a commanding centre-back to help improve United’s defensive record after they conceded a whopping 54 Premier League goals last season – the most they’ve conceded for 40 years.
Maguire has been touted as a prime target in recent weeks and Sky Sports claim Man Utd have now moved ahead of Man City into pole position to sign the England international after tabling an improved £70m offer.
The report says United have been in negotiations with Leicester City for several weeks but their latest bid is likely to fall short as the Foxes are desperate to hold on to Maguire for at least another season.
However, Sky Sports suggests Leicester will be forced to cash-in if a world record offer worth over £75m is put on the table and they hope to generate a bidding war between United and City this summer.
Maguire still hasn’t returned to pre-season training as the clubs international players have been given extended leave but it will be interesting to see if he joins the Leicester squad when they set off for their pre-season training camp on Sunday.
If a deal is agreed with United over the coming days then obviously Maguire won’t go but Sky Sports claim the centre-back is settled at Leicester and won’t force a move so it’s up to the Red Devils to get a fee agreed.

We’ll have to wait and see how things progress over the coming days but Maguire would be an excellent signing for Man Utd if they could lure him to Old Trafford as he’d be a big upgrade on the likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling.
