Arsenal have made a shock move to try and sign Marcelo after the Brazilian left-back expressed his desire to leave Real Madrid this summer, according to reports in Spain via the Metro.

Gunners boss Unai Emery is desperate to strengthen his squad after a disappointing first season in England that saw him fail to finish in the top four and crash 4-1 to Chelsea in the Europa League final.

Defence is a particular area of concern as we conceded 51 goals in the league last season and Emery has been strongly tipped to sign a new left-back due to on-going concerns over the reliability of Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac.

Kieran Tierney has been strongly linked with a move to the Emirates in recent weeks but we’re struggling to agree a fee with Celtic and it seems Arsenal have now lined-up an ambitious alternative target.

The Metro are citing a report from Sport that claims Arsenal are one of several clubs who’ve expressed their interest in signing Marcelo after the left-back informed Real Madrid he wants to leave the club this summer.

The Spanish publication says Marcelo has already received several offers with Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and AC Milan named as the clubs who’ve made attempts to land the Brazilian international.

New customer offer. Place 5 x €/£10 or more bets to receive €/£20 in free bets. Repeat up to 5 times to receive maximum €/£100 bonus. Min odds 1/2 (1.5). Exchange bets excluded. Full T&Cs Apply. 18+|Gamble Aware.

Marcelo is currently on holiday considering his options and Sport says the 31-year-old’s agent is due to meet with Madrid president Florentino Perez to try and negotiate his exit from the Bernabeu.

It would certainly be a major coup if Arsenal could somehow lure Marcelo to the Emirates as he’s arguably been the best left-back in Europe over the past decade having joined Madrid from Fluminense in 2007.

The South American has scored 36 goals and provided 90 assists in his 486 appearances to help Los Blancos win a number of trophies including four La Liga titles and four Champions League’s.

However, his first team place is under serious threat after Madrid splashed out £47m on Frenchman Ferland Mendy this summer and it seems Arsenal are hoping to offer Marcelo a fresh start here in England.
