Real Madrid midfielder Dani Cabellos will join either Arsenal or Tottenham on loan this summer with a final decision expected to be made over the coming days, according to Spanish outlet Sport.
Ceballos joined Madrid from Real Betis in 2017 as one of the most highly-rated young talents in Spanish football but he’s struggled to establish himself as a regular having started just 13 La Liga games last season.
It’s led to speculation the midfielder will be on the move this summer in search of regular football and Ceballos has sparked interest from the Premier League after starring for Spain during their triumphant 2019 Under-21 European Championship campaign.
Marca reported last week that Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool were all vying for the 22-year-old’s signature while a number of other European clubs have also been credited with an interest in the talented youngster.
However, it looks like Ceballos has narrowed down his options to just two clubs as Sport claims sources close to the player have told them the midfielder has decided to join either Arsenal or Tottenham this summer.
The Spanish publication says it’s now down to Unai Emery and Mauricio Pochettino to persuade Ceballos to join their team and a final decision is expected to be made in a matter of days as Madrid head off on their pre-season tour on Tuesday.
The report says Ceballos likes the idea of playing for fellow Spaniard Emery at the Emirates and the Arsenal boss in the market for a new midfielder to replace Aaron Ramsey following his free transfer move to Juventus.
However, Sport says Ceballos has a particular soft spot for Pochettino and would love to be coached by the Argentinean so they make Tottenham the narrow favourites to secure his signature.
Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane has made it clear to the midfielder that he isn’t in his first team plans so there have been reports suggesting the La Liga giants would sell if around €50m was put on the table this summer.
However, Sport claims Ceballos is determined to make it at Madrid and has reluctantly agreed to leave this summer on the condition it’s only a one-year loan move with no option to buy clauses included in the deal.
Therefore, the newspaper says the Spanish youngster will only join Arsenal or Tottenham on a season-long loan before moving back to Madrid next summer with the aim of breaking into their first team set-up.
It’s going to be interesting to see how things develop over the coming days but I think Ceballos would be an excellent signing for Arsenal or Spurs, even if they are only able to have him on a short-term basis.
