Tottenham are looking to trump Liverpool to the signing of Dani Ceballos after opening talks with Real Madrid to sign the £45m-rated midfielder this summer, according to Sky Sports News.
Ceballos has struggled to establish himself as a first team regular at Madrid since joining the club from Real Betis in 2017 with the youngster only managing to start 13 La Liga games for Los Blancos last season.
With Zinedine Zidane undertaking something of an overhaul this summer, Ceballos has been tipped to leave the Bernabeu in search of regular football and has no shortage of suitors after starring for Spain during their triumphant 2019 Under-21 European Championship campaign.
Sky Sports cite a report from Spanish newspaper Marca that claims Liverpool are ready to make a £45m bid after Jurgen Klopp identified Ceballos as a potential summer signing as he looks to strengthen his Champions League winning squad. AS says a bid of that amount would be enough to get a deal agreed so Liverpool would be confident of getting a deal done if they formalised their interest.
However, it seems Tottenham are hoping to hijack Liverpool’s attempts to sign the 22-year-old as Sky Sports claim Spurs are now in negotiations with Madrid over a possible deal to sign Ceballos this summer.
Ceballos recently admitted he wants to ‘try something new’ next season as he wants to play 40 games in order to try and force his way into the Spanish national team squad for Euro 2020.
The midfielder is quoted by Sky Sport as saying:
“I think [Zinedine] Zidane will have seen the tournament. But we all know what he thinks.
“I would like to try out something new: next year, my goal is to play 40 games and play in the Euros.”
The news outlet says a loan move is likely as the player is reluctant to leave Madrid on a permanent basis and the fact he has four years left on his contract and a huge release clause makes a permanent deal difficult.
Mauricio Pochettino has already snapped up Jack Clarke and Tanguy Ndombele but the Spurs boss is expected to bring in another midfielder amid speculation Christian Eriksen will leave this summer after casting doubt over his future.
Ceballos would be an exciting replacement for the Danish international if Tottenham could get a deal agreed with Madrid but Liverpool are also seemingly in the race so I wouldn’t rule out the Merseysiders just yet.
