Liverpool in battle to sign £18m star + Klopp eyes former England international

Here we have news on Liverpool’s interest in a former England international while they’ll face competition to sign an £18m left-back.

We’re now at the business end of the summer transfer window and managers are working hard trying to strengthen their squads so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip from around the globe. Here, Liverpool are linked with Philipp Max and Tom Heaton….

First up and the Express are carrying a report suggesting that Liverpool will face fresh competition from Newcastle United for the signing of £18m-rated Augsburg full-back Philipp Max.

Jurgen Klopp isn’t expected to make any big-money additions to his squad after winning the Champions League last season but the Reds boss is still in the market for further reinforcements and a new left-back could be on the agenda.

With Alberto Moreno off to Villarreal on a free transfer, Klopp needs support for Andy Robertson and Sport claimed last weekend that Liverpool have joined Barcelona in expressing an interest in Philipp Max.

The Spanish publication says Max is available for around £18m this summer with Augsburg seemingly prepared to cash-in four years after signing the German defender from Karlsruther SC.

The 25-year-old is known for his attacking instincts having supplied 17 assists in his last two seasons so he’d be an excellent back-up for Robertson – who provided 13 assists during a sensational campaign last year.

However, Liverpool may face fresh competition as the Express are citing a report from Chronicle Live who claim Newcastle are also eyeing a move for Max after being offered the left-back by his agent.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop but it looks as though Liverpool and Newcastle could both be keen on luring Max to the Premier League this summer and I think he’d be a terrific signing for either club.

Klopp could also be in the market for another goalkeeper as the Reds have been short of options in pre-season with Liverpool forced to take free agent Andy Lonergan on their tour of the United States.

Obviously number one Alisson Becker will be back soon after enjoying an extended break following his participation in the Copa America this summer but several younger goalkeepers are currently on the sidelines through injury.

Simon Mignolet’s future is also in doubt as the Belgian international has fallen behind Alisson in the pecking order and will need to leave if he wants to be playing regular first team football again.

It means Klopp may be eyeing reinforcements between the sticks ahead of the new season and the Daily Mail claim Liverpool are interested in signing Burnley stopper Tom Heaton.

The 33-year-old has just one year left on his contract at Turf Moor so Liverpool should be able to pick him up at a very reasonable price if Klopp decides to make a formal move but he’ll face competition as the report says Aston Villa are also interested.

Heaton has 3 caps for England and has plenty of Premier League experience under his belt so he’d be a solid addition to Liverpool’s goalkeeping options if he made a move to Anfield this summer.
