Manchester United have tabled a formal £80million bid for Harry Maguire and have told Leicester City they have until Monday to made a decision over their take it or leave it offer, talkSPORT understands.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been desperately trying to sign a top class centre-back throughout the summer as he looks to strengthen a defence that conceded 54 Premier League goals last season.

Maguire has been widely touted as United’s prime target but they’ve been frustrated in their attempts to get a deal agreed with Leicester after the Foxes rejected their £70m bid at the start of July [Source: Sky Sports News].

The Mirror reported last month that Maguire had informed boss Brendan Rodgers that he wanted to leave the King Power Stadium but Leicester stood firm and insisted they’d only sell if a world record fee for a defender was put on the table.

That meant United had to beat the £75m Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk if they wanted to get a deal agreed for Maguire and it looks like the Manchester giants have finally caved and given Leicester what they want.

talkSPORT presenter Jim White claims Man Utd have now submitted a formal £80m offer for Maguire’s signature and informed Leicester they have until Monday to accept it or the bid will be taken off the table.

There have been rumours suggesting the Foxes had upped their demands to nearer £90m but I expect they’ll find it very difficult to turn down United’s improved £80m offer now that it’s been formally submitted.

The news of United’s latest bid comes after Maguire was left out of a video posted on the official Leicester twitter account revealing the club’s shirt numbers for the upcoming campaign, which obviously fuelled speculation linking the defender with an imminent move.

We should see further developments over the coming days but it looks like Solskjaer is finally closing-in on one of his key transfer targets with Maguire ready to complete a move to Old Trafford if Leicester accept the record £80m offer.

The 26-year-old would become Solskjaer’s third summer signing following the arrivals of Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka and I think he’d be an excellent addition to the United squad as he’d be a big upgrade on Phil Jones and Chris Smalling.

£80 million for Maguire is ridiculous. The fee implies he’s better than van dijk and frankly he’s just not. Man U might not be able to find a better player, but they can sure find a better deal.
