Unai Emery wants to sign Sami Khedira this summer with the Arsenal boss hoping to persuade Juventus to let the midfielder leave on a free transfer, according to Calcio Mercato.

Emery just broke Arsenal’s transfer record following the £72m capture of Nicolas Pepe from Lille on Thursday with the Ivory Coast international joining Gabriel Martinelli, William Saliba and Dani Ceballos in moving to the Emirates this summer.

However, Emery’s business isn’t going to stop there as he’s expected to try and bring in at least two more signings before the window closes on August 8 and Khedira has emerged as a surprise target.

The 32-year-old fuelled speculation linking him with a move to Arsenal after being spotted in the directors box at the Emirates Cup last weekend and Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri then claimed the midfielder was close to joining the Gunners.

Now it’s the turn of Calcio Mercato as they suggest that Emery is keen to sign Khedira and is hoping to persuade Juventus to terminate the final year of his contract to allow him to join Arsenal on a free transfer.

The Italian publication says the Arsenal board isn’t convinced yet due to concerns over Khedira’s age but Emery wants to add the experienced German international to his midfield ranks ahead of the new season.

Juventus are yet to make a final decision over Khedira’s future but Calcio Mercato claims Arsenal are the only club the Serie A giants will do business with if they decide to let him leave this summer.

Maurizio Sarri has a wealth of midfield options after adding Aaron Ramsey and Adrien Rabiot to a squad that also includes Emre Can, Miralem Pjanic, Rodrigo Bentancur and Blaise Matuidi as well as Khedira so Juve are expected to sell at least one of these players.

Khedira and Matuida are the names most likely to be sold but it remains to be seen whether Juventus will be willing to allow the German ace to join Arsenal for nothing or if they’ll hold out for a transfer fee.

There is no doubt Khedira would add experience to our squad if he does join Arsenal but he’s nowhere near the player he was during his prime as injuries have taken their toll so I wouldn’t be too disheartened if this proposed move didn’t come off.
