Manchester United have suffered a fresh injury concern ahead of their huge showdown with Liverpool after Mason Greenwood was forced to withdraw from England duty, as confirmed on ManUtd.com.

Greenwood came on as a second half substitute when he replaced Juan Mata in the 66th minute during United’s 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.

However, it appears the young forward picked up a knock yesterday as Man Utd have confirmed today that Greenwood has withdrawn from the England U21 squad due to a back injury.

The 18-year-old made his debut for Aidy Boothroyd’s side against Turkey last month and was due to feature in their Group C European qualifiers against Slovenia and Austria over the coming days.

However, Greenwood will now remain at United’s Carrington training base to work on his recovery and his injury will come as another blow to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the United boss has had to deal with a number of injury problems over the past few weeks.

Attack has been a particular area of concern for United as Anthony Martial has been out for over a month with a thigh problem while Marcus Rashford has only just returned to action following a groin issue and he looked rusty against Newcastle.

With options limited in attack recently, Greenwood has seen plenty of first team action and the teenager scored his first senior goals against Astana in the Europa League and Rochdale in the Carabao Cup.

Solskjaer will be praying Greenwood’s injury isn’t serious as he looks to get Man Utd’s season back on track when they welcome fierce north-west rivals Liverpool to Old Trafford after the international break.

However, the Man Utd boss has several other injury worries to contend with as Paul Pogba missed the Newcastle game with an ankle injury while Jesse Lingard also missed the trip to the north-east with a thigh injury.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Phil Jones, Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Tim Fosu-Mensah are also on the treatment table so United will hope to use the international break to get some of their players fit ahead of the Liverpool showdown.
