“Fantastic” – Arsenal legend hails Mesut Ozil’s performance against Liverpool

Ian Wright has heaped praise on Mesut Ozil for his ‘fantastic’ performance during Arsenal’s thrilling 5-5 draw with Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday night.

Ian Wright has heaped praise on Mesut Ozil for his ‘fantastic’ performance during Arsenal’s thrilling 5-5 draw with Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday night.

Ozil has found first team football hard to come by at Arsenal this season as the playmaker had made just two appearances this campaign ahead of last night’s Carabao Cup fourth round trip to Liverpool.

The German international hadn’t been seen since the third round win over Nottingham Forest as Unai Emery had frozen him out of the first team set-up amid concerns over his work-rate and attitude.

However, Ozil was recalled for the League Cup clash last night and he put on a virtuoso performance as he played a part in two of Arsenal’s first three goals before setting up Ainsley Maitland-Niles for their fourth with an exquisite back heel.

The 31-year-old was replaced by Matteo Guendouzi midway through the second half in what was a pre-planned substitution and he was given a standing ovation from the travelling Arsenal supporters at Anfield.

The Gunners eventually crashed out of the Carabao Cup after blowing a two-goal lead and conceding a stoppage-time equaliser to draw 5-5 with Liverpool in an incredible match before losing the penalty shoot-out 5-4.

However, Ozil’s performance was one of the huge positives Emery can take away from the game and Arsenal legend Ian Wright was quick to praise the playmakers display on social media.

Wright took to Twitter last night to hail Ozil’s ‘fantastic’ performance saying the attacker’s ability to find space and create chances is what Arsenal have been missing this season.

It was certainly an impressive display by Ozil last night so it will be interesting to see if he’s done enough to keep his place when Arsenal welcome Wolves to the Emirates on Saturday afternoon.
