Nani Injury: Not How big the Cut is, its Where it was

By on March 8, 2011

Luis Nani’s leg has been the most debated subject in football this weekend. Why wasn’t it a red card? Is his injury that bad? Why did he get up and complain? Are the pictures photoshopped? Should Nani have been booked for diving?

Well, I’m sure someone has said the last one, but the fact is, a lot of people are missing the point. I have seen so many commnts saying how Nani was pathetic to cry while others would have got up and carried on playing. This is a comment on one website showing the image of Nani’s leg:

“I’ve fractured my leg before, I’ve dislocated my shoulder before, I’ve dislocated my elbow and broke my arm before……I’ve not cried in all of them”

I mean – come on. Who cares? This isn’t about crying or not crying, this is about the scandalous decision not to send Jamie Carragher off for a blatant assault on Nani. It was a disgrace of a tackle, so sickening, so dangerous that no matter which way you look at it, tears or no tears, a red should have been shown. The fact that Carragher recieved only a yellow for the tackle, while Edwin van der sar recieved the same punishment for simply expressing his understanable exasperation at the decision is a joke.

I cannot understand how people can attempt to excuse it, or even play down the injury which someclaim to be photoshopped. Again, it does not matter how deep the wound is, it is the height of the tackle which is the despairing part of it. There is no argument for Carragher to stay on the pitch.

Forget about photoshop, forget the excuses, look at the tackle, not the result of it.

Tell me what you think!

i dont understand what all the arguing is about this. As a United fan , yes i admit that we had it coming and our performance was a complete shambles compared to the performance of Suarez and Liverpool . However the tackle on Nani was absolutely awful and that should have credited a red card as his studs showed over the ball , automatic red card. And yes Rafael should have been sent off too , lunged with studs showing and two feet off the ground , automatic red card.
Now for the case of Liverpool coming back now and winning the league next season , hahah dont be stupid :’) ! You Liverpool fans say this every single season and its just getting boring now listening to it and watching your team completely fall apart. Yes very well you beat Manchester United emphatically ; but maybe you dont realise that Liverpool always play brilliantly against United , they play their best against United as a matter of fact , and the reason for that sadly is at the end of every season you know that all you can take from it pathetically is that you beat Manchester United because Liverpool cant compete for top honours at the moment 🙂 ! You are currently 18 points behind us and are so abismal that you arnt even in the champions league ! Beat us as much as you want , but dont make tits of yourselves and start saying that you will win the league unless you start being consistent and beat the little teams every week , because thats what you need to do to even dare mention comparisons between yourselves and the big dogs like United , Arsenal and Chelsea. And dont even start with your history that you’ve won more trophies than us because we’re talking about now , not 30 years ago (another thing that annoys me about Liverpool fans , always lift out their history books because they’ve got nothing to show at the moment 😉 !)

It wasnt a terrible challenge its just the amount of force which was behind it and the fact that he gashed nani’s leg. should of been a red but if it had of been terry on the recieving end of that tackle we wouldnt be having this debate, as everyone knows he would of just of got up and played on, untill he eventually fainted due to blood loss.
And to the idiot who said that the gash would only need butterfly stitches, you honestly think a few bit of tape will hold that togeather? haha

the tackle was ugly, it should’ve been red. but the burden of punishment should not be on carra, it should’ve been phil dowd. but then again playing for a proud big club, you should not moan/cry tears begging for sympathy, it was too obvious. everybody’s injured, even snapped their shin and ankles, sir bobby, roy keane, cantona, and even ronaldo the so called drama king have never shed any tears on the pitch. well to me its not about the cut, not about where it was, its about how you react. so lets move on and go for the league. cheers

Are all you Manc lovers mad. What goes around comes around. It’s fine to elbow someone in the face one week and then moan about decisions not going your way the next as if the whole world is against you. Yes Carra should have gone but do you honestly think that game was going any other way. Liverpool would have won that with 8 men the Mancs were that poor. Scholes has been tackling people for about 25 years like that. And Ferguson keeps on showing his true colours every time that sore looser doesnt get his own way. 1 word Fergie – Karma. And as for the crying. Go and ask some proper United fans what they think about one of their players crying his eyes out at their arch-rivals ground!

Tell me what I think? I think you’re a plonker.

As is anyone who decribes this as a “horror tackle” “disgusting challenge” etc, etc.

It was a clumsy tackle, and I’ve seen less get a red card (the crucial thing was that one foot was on the ground, Gerrard’s red in teh FA cup was not as harsh a tackle as this, but he had both feet off the ground for an automatic red) but I’ve also seen WORSE tackles get no card at all.

This was NOT a travesty of justice, just a clumsy tackle that had a bad result.

    Rafael. End discussion.

At least the ref was consistently awful.

If Carra were to shoot skeets he will miss everyone of them. The ball had already moved when he got his tackle in. Plays with his heart, and hardly a malicious player. Why else would he try to apologise for the tackle. Many other players who have put in more vicious career ending tackles have refused to acknowledge their bad tackles, let alone apologise.

No doubt that Nani was hurt. But he was a lot more theatrical than he should have been.

“I’ve fractured my leg before, I’ve dislocated my shoulder before, I’ve dislocated my elbow and broke my arm before……I’ve not cried in all of them”
Urmmm who is this idiot for breaking and rebreaking himself so many times?
