Arsenal In £50m Summer Spending Spree, But Face Competition From Chelsea & Utd

By on March 18, 2011

Karim Benzema - Real Madrid v Malaga - La Liga

Plagued with injuries throughout the season to the extent that a new/old goalkeeper had to be brought in for back up, as well as being tormented with off form players slipping up a crucial times in massive matches, and Arsene Wenger is understandably frustrated. He must be wondering what he has done wrong to deserve the punishment of seeing his loyal but exhausted players suffer in this way. It isn’t all bad when you consider Arsenal’s position in the table – three points behind the leaders with a game in hand – but this season could have been about so much more than just the Premier League crown.

It is perhaps no wonder then, that Arsenal are being linked to two big money players to boost the squad this summer – give it some well needed depth, diversity and energy. These two players are Bolton’s Gary Cahill and Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema. I honestly cannot see it myself. It isn’t that the two players wouldn’t fit into the squad; Cahill, a strong, reliable, often goal scoring centre back would be welcomed in the beleaguered defence, while Benzema will have no shortage of fellow countrymen to communicate with (not to mention being a top class front man).  The rumours really get unbelievable when the price is quoted.

Cahill and Benzema are being valued at £25 million by the news sources. That’s £25 million each. Probably around £40 million more than Wenger would dream of spending. His cautious, low profile approach to the transfer market has caused plenty of frustration among even patient supporters, as they await their first trophy for six years. It may yet come this year, but it will undoubtedly be very close, and with all of the teams around them certain to improve their squads in the summer, Arsenal do not want to be left behind at the start of next season in a year which looks to be even more competitive and tight than even this year has been so far.

Manchester United are apparently Arsenal’s competition for the 25 year-old Cahill. United have seen a Vidic – Smalling partnership blossom in the absence of the seemingly always injured Rio Ferdinand, and if Ferdinand ever does receive further injures which is highly likely, United will need a top quality replacement. There have also been unsettling murmurings of Vidic’s future as a United player as his wife apparently doesn’t like it in Manchester. The Wes Brown – Chris Smalling defensive partnership has been poor so far, and Sir Alex will look for a new defender to banish any defensive worries in the future.

A bidding war is something neither side would want however, with Arsenal’s reluctance to spend, and United’s crushing debts reducing the possibility of big money signings. The website states; “The Trotters [Bolton] are bracing themselves for bids in the summer, and both Arsenal and Manchester United are expected to come to the table at some point with an offer for the England international.

Chelsea are also thought to be keen on landing the player, with the west London outfit also interested in the 25-year-old former Aston Villa defender. Arsenal are still thought to be favourites though, although the Gunners will have to fight hard to see off Manchester United if these claims are to be believed.”

Meanwhile, Wenger is supposedly a “big fan” of Benzema who was bought by Madrid from Lyon for £35 million two seasons ago. It is easy to see why, as Benzema has masses of exactly what Wenger is always looking for, craving for, searching for: “potential”. 17 goals in 52 appearances this season isn’t to impressive, but his previous form is far more impressive, with one season amassing 20 goals in just 36 appearances. A partnership of van Persie and Benzema would also be a vast improvement to what they have at the moment, and would add he depth up front which has been lacking.

Sir Alex Ferguson had tried to bring Benzema to United before he joined Madrid, but I doubt he would be after him again after being turned down already.

Tell me what you think!

I honestly can’t see it happening. Is it not Wenger? I don’t think he will ever buy a player whose value is more than £15 million. Perhaps we dont know dat Arsene is the problem of Arsenal.

25M for Cahill? Hahahaha. 25M for a player who has no European experience, plays for a mid to bottom table team and not an established international for a remotely competent country. I couldn’t blame Wenger for not buying him – overrated if you ask me. Roger Johnson is just as good, maybe better, and nowhere near that kind of outrageous cost.

Forget it. Wenger will carry on with his uncle scrooge image. He believes in value for money. Just look at the two French defenders he bought.
I’m afraid he will continue to give more misery to gooner fans with the latest news he wants to see out his contract. He could confound us by winning the title. But it’s big if considering the defence.

Because we’re not stupid enough to pay over the odds for a player out of sheer desperation

I dont blame wenger…cahill 25? english talent is over rated. players worth millions who would not even be chosen to play for national teams of the top 10 footballing nations. even thou england is in that group, every defender from the other teams is better.

The WC will serve as an example,

What a load of rubbish, Cahill is not worth that so wenger won’t go for him and benzema he should of bought him last summer as now he is playing a good partnership with ronaldo and is scoring alot. So again little to late wenger. There will be money spent this summer but on French players we have not really heard of.

This honestly is one of the most annoying rumors i have heard this year. Wenger? to pay such for two players…… common!!!! Not Wenger. He will rather wait for some cheap or out of contract player to buy.

    Out should go Almunia,Fabianski,Squlachi,Eboue,Denilson,Rosicky,
Bentner and Arshavin should bring in around 40 million
In should come Reina,Cahill,ScottParker,Ashley Young and Benzema cost around 100 million

TUNNEX is very correct. Wenger is the architect of Arsenal’s woes. He know his problems which is d dept of the squad and prolific, combative, versatile and experienced defence, attack and Midfield. He shud do something else, Gunner will experience more years without trophies.

we have no need for any more ball playing midfielders that call themselves strikers ,we control possession most games , so what ? the ball moving from side to side , no real predator , maybe eduardo could have been, but we lack a striker who can do it in tough times, united have a couple ,chelsea also even city have the little argentinian , we need a player with the philosophy of winning the ball and going for goal , when we win the ball up front and our players apart from sick note walcott all want to pass it 50 yards back. bendtner.chamack ,compare the directness of say agbonlahor to out two.

Well we have some loyal arsenal fans here . . . not! You all moan when we dont spend but you dont complain when these cheap players win us games, atleast im an arsenal fan that is happy with the fact that we got young talent for many years to come and that we are not in debt like the mancs. A new GK, CB and ST would be nice but the stability of arsenal football club is more important.

the only way that Wenger manages Benzema is if he moves to manage RM. Not happening.

It all depends how much we raise with the departure of players this summer! Cesc=£45m, Almunia=£2m Clichy+£10m for Benzema, Denilson=£10m, Rosicky=£5m, Arshavin=£12m, Bendtner=£10m. Arsenal will have the money lets just hope he spends it on Cahill, Benzema and Ashley Young!!! Also players back from injury and loan deals….Vermealen, Botelho, Traore, Frimpong, Lansbury, Miyaichi, Vela, JET!!!
