Liverpool are reportedly battling with Premier League rivals over a deal to sign AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori, as per Italian outlet Quotidiano Sportivo.
Initially, the Reds reinforced their backline by signing Jeremy Jacquet from Stade Rennais. More recently, they have signed Ronald Araujo on loan from Barcelona, with a buy option reportedly included in the deal.
Therefore, Andoni Iraola currently has Giovanni Leoni, Joe Gomez and Virgil Van Dijk, alongside Jacquet and Araujo, as options to deploy in the centre-back positions.
However, Gomez has continued to struggle with fitness problems in recent years, while Leoni has been out due to a serious knee issue for almost a year.
On the other hand, Jacquet has also had injury issues; as a result, he hasn’t been able to play any pre-season matches thus far. Van Dijk, meanwhile, has reached the twilight of his career and showed signs of decline last term. He has even entered the final year of his current contract.
Now, Quotidiano Sportivo report that Liverpool have made a move to sign Tomori and Milan are ready to cash-in on him this summer, with his existing deal set to expire at the end of next campaign.
The Rossoneri currently have a bloated squad and are planning to trim it down before the September 1st transfer deadline. Apart from the Reds, Coventry City and Newcastle United have also expressed their interest in signing Tomori.
Tomori to Liverpool
Tomori is a right-footed centre-back by trait but can provide cover in the right-back position if needed. He is quick, strong, good in the air, comfortable playing out from the back, and efficient in defensive contributions.
Since moving to San Siro Stadium from Chelsea, the Englishman, valued at around £14m by Transfermarkt, has enjoyed success, winning a Serie A title and Supercoppa Italiana.
The 28-year-old is a talented player and is currently at the prime stage of his career. Moreover, he possesses the necessary attributes to flourish in Andoni Iraola’s high-pressing style of football.
Therefore, Tomori would be a shrewd acquisition for Liverpool should they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the Merseyside club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services during this offseason.
