Everton are plotting a surprise swoop to sign former Manchester City fullback Kyle Walker from Bayern Munich this summer, according to the Sun.
The Toffees are already up and running in the ongoing transfer window as the club look to adequately bolster David Moyes’ squad for another ambitious European push after missing out last season.
So far, the club have completed the permanent transfers of Tyrique George and Merlin Rohl from Chelsea and Freiburg, respectively, after the attacking duo spent last season on initial loan deals.
The Toffees also beat several competitors to recoup last season’s Championship player of the season, Hayden Hackney, from Middlesbrough, while former Brentford captain Christian Norgaard was signed from Arsenal to add more steel and experience in the middle of the park.
Attack appears to remain a key focus after the club also recently agreed a swap deal with Crystal Palace to bring in Brennan Johnson, with Dwight McNeil going the opposite direction.
The club have now turned their attention to bolstering their backline, especially the fullback positions, and have been linked with several options.
The latest name linked with the club is Burnley’s Walker, according to the Sun, which claims Everton have expressed interest in signing the 36-year-old this summer.
Experienced fullback
After coming close to signing for Everton on two occasions, a deal could now finally happen due to David Moyes’ desire to bring him to the Hill Dickinson Stadium this summer, according to the report.
With just a year left on his contract, the Sun clarifies that, should a deal for Walker be formalised, it’ll cost only a meagre fee.
Everton’s need for a fullback comes as no surprise, as the club have been mostly deploying makeshift options. While Jake O’Brien has impressed there, his pre-season performances suggest his qualities are better suited to his natural centre-back position.
On the other hand, Nathann Paterson has not proven fully reliable, further heightening the need for a more dependable option.
Having played 36 of Burnley’s 38 Premier League games last season, it’s clear why the Toffees have set their sights on Walker, as the England international, who has been described as ‘unbelievable’ by Thomas Tuchel, could be an ever-present figure in the team’s backline.
With six Premier League titles and 446 appearances to his name, Walker would be an experienced option for the club, bringing not only his quality on the pitch but also valuable leadership to the dressing room.
