Arsenal have had a productive summer transfer window so far as they signed Christos Tzolis and Bruno Guimaraes, but Mikel Arteta is looking for another offensive addition who can contribute consistently with returns in the final third.
Lately, the board’s focus has been on signing a central defender as well following William Saliba’s injury at the World Cup but that’s not to say they have not been tracking some attacking names from around Europe ahead of the new season.
El Nacional has reported that Arsenal continue to retain interest in Atletico Madrid hitman Julian Alvarez, and have now emerged in pole position to secure the Argentine international’s signing from the La Liga outfit before Deadline Day.
Barcelona are keen on signing Alvarez but Atletico are determined to prevent him from joining a domestic rival. However, with the player asking to leave the club and being visibly unhappy, they are ready to sanction his departure overseas.
Alvarez to Arsenal may materialise quickly
Julian Alvarez remains keen on joining Barcelona, who are his first priority, but given that Atletico Madrid are reluctant in letting him sign for the Catalans, a move to Arsenal could materialise sooner rather than later this month.
Paris Saint-Germain had been keen on Alvarez too, but as they close in on Ferran Torres’ purchase, it remains to be seen how much importance they give Alvarez after bringing in Maghnes Akliouche as well earlier in the summer.
Mikel Arteta’s side would be significantly bolstered by the addition of a player who can play as an attacking midfielder, left winger and centre forward, as well as Premier League experience. Alvarez has also consistently produced great numbers in the final third.
He is valued at £102 million on Transfermarkt, but it remains to be seen what Atletico Madrid are actually looking for. Arsenal have the funds to afford Alvarez very comfortably and as he looks to join a side that challenges regularly for silverware, the Gunners might be the forward’s best bet if the door to Barcelona is shut.
