Tottenham Hotspur interested in signing Malo Gusto from Chelsea after Djed Spence exit

Malo Gusto: 'Pochettino knows he has to wake up our mentality. We are Chelsea. We have to win' - The Athletic

Tottenham Hotspur sold Djed Spence to Inter Milan last week and are in the transfer market looking for a replacement considering his strong qualities and importance in the team over the last couple of seasons.

French journalist Sebastien Vidal has reported that Spurs are keen on signing Malo Gusto from Chelsea after Spence’s departure with the player looking to depart the Blues this summer.

RMC Sport has reported that Gusto is valued at £75 million by Chelsea, with Manchester City also interested in him. It remains to be seen how much negotiation room is there given the Londoners’ high asking price for the player.

Gusto not worth the money for Spurs

Djed Spence was naturally a right back but played extensively on the left side of the back four for Tottenham Hotspur, so how much value Malo Gusto’s purchase from Chelsea would bring to their squad is debatable.

At left back, Roberto De Zerbi already has Destiny Udogie and Souza to pick from, while Andy Robertson is the best and most experienced option having arrived at the club as a free agent from Liverpool earlier this summer.

Pedro Porro is doing an exceptional job at right back and he could be helped by the addition of a back-up option but whether an expenditure worth £75 million on Gusto’s services for that purpose might not be something Spurs are willing to sign up for.

It will be interesting to see how much Spurs’ budget is for a right back this summer but considering their strength in the left back position, it would be a surprise if they invested more money on a signing to play in that role.

Spurs play Brentford on matchday one of the Premier League on Saturday and how Roberto De Zerbi’s line-up looks like for the fixture could give an idea of the formation and defensive quartet he plans on using in 2026/27.
