Arsenal identify Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez as a long-term target

Arsenal have yet to make their much-anticipated offensive addition this summer but with only two weeks to go until the transfer window slams shut, the Gunners might show more intent as they look to defend their Premier League title in 2026/27.
The Athletic has reported that they have identified Atletico Madrid hitman Julian Alvarez as a long-term target after the player expressed his desire to depart the La Liga side earlier in the summer in pursuit of a new challenge.
Barcelona have been linked with him but Diego Simeone has confirmed that he expects Alvarez to stay put at Atletico next season. In addition to the Argentine international, Juventus star Kenan Yildiz has been identified as an option too, as per The Athletic.
On Transfermarkt, Alvarez is valued at £103 million and has a contract with Los Rojiblancos until 2030. It will be interesting to see how much his actual asking price is if Arsenal decide to make a formal approach for his signatures.
Alvarez future open
Diego Simeone said in his press conference that Julian Alvarez will stay at Atletico Madrid, but they might be prepared to sell him to an overseas club rather than Barcelona if the forward does not wish to re-integrate himself into their squad.
Rather than banking on a player who is not committed to them, Simeone and Atletico would see Alvarez’s sale as a chance to fund a holistic squad rebuild, which means his future is very much up in the air even at the latter stages of the summer.
Julian Alvarez would be an excellent addition at Arsenal. His goal-scoring and offensive intelligence needs no introduction, whereas his adaptability, tactical knowhow and Premier League experience at Manchester City would make him a success in London.
While Alvarez has been identified as a signing for the longer run by Arsenal, it remains to be seen if they consider his signing this summer itself or are keeping their eyes on the 26-year-old for the future.
