Arsenal have started the season on a high as they secured the FA Community Shield with a 3-0 win over Manchester City, and began their title defence in the Premier League on a positive note too with a success over Coventry City.
Compared to their rivals, the Gunners looked head and shoulders higher in quality on matchday one but Mikel Arteta continues to chase an elusive Champions League title as well, and with that in mind, he is keen on the addition of a new attacker.
The Athletic has reported that Arsenal remain in the mix to sign Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid but will need to pay £128 million to secure the Argentine international’s services as he wishes to depart the La Liga club this summer.
He featured for the first time this season for Diego Simeone’s side in a 2-2 draw versus Villarreal on Sunday in La Liga and was heavily booed by the home supporters before leaving the pitch without facing the fanbase at full-time, fuelling talks of his exit.
Excellent signing for Arsenal
Barcelona remain Julian Alvarez’s preferred destination but Atletico Madrid are determined against selling the player to the Catalans, which might eventually result in Arsenal winning the race for his services.
Julian Alvarez would be a terrific signing for the Gunners. His consistent goal-scoring, creativity, set-piece prowess and tactical intelligence make him a well-rounded modern-day attacker, and his ability to play as a left winger is a huge advantage too.
The 26-year-old has already tasted success in the Premier League with Manchester City, where he won the title under Pep Guardiola, albeit as a secondary player. Hs adaptability and consistent up top mean he would be a solid signing nonetheless.
It will be interesting to see if Arsenal are willing to match Atletico’s £128 million asking price, and if the Spaniards are willing to lower their demands if they decide it’s best to part ways with Alvarez.
With only a week to go until the transfer window ends, one of the world’s most extraordinary attackers could decide his future sooner rather than later.
