Tottenham Hotspur considering Chelsea star Mykhaylo Mudryk as Cody Gakpo alternative

Chelsea reject opening loan offer from Leeds United for Mykhailo Mudryk as negotiations continue | Goal.com

Tottenham Hotspur started the Premier League with a 3-0 defeat to Brentford on matchday one. While defensively they were lacklustre from the word go, the attackers did not cover themselves in much glory either.

With deals for Manchester City forwards Omar Marmoush and Savinho now pending only official confirmation, Spurs are interested in bringing in another offensive name, preferably a left winger, to their squad.

Liverpool hitman Cody Gakpo has been linked with a switch to London lately but the Dutchman might not be sold by the Reds unless they acquire a replacement for the player with talks ongoing with Paris Saint-Germain for Bradley Barcola.

Nicolo Schira has reported that although Gakpo remains Spurs’ priority target, Chelsea star Mykhaylo Mudryk has emerged as the plan B for the Lilywhites with the Blues prepared to let him depart Stamford Bridge for regular minutes.

Mudryk is back in action after a 20-month suspension for doping and while he is in Chelsea’s long-term plans, they are ready to send him on loan for this season. Whether Spurs would be happy with that or want a permanent transfer remains to be seen.

Mudryk not a suitable alternative for Gakpo

Even though there is no denying his sky-high qualities, Mykhaylo Mudryk is far from the ideal alternative for Tottenham Hotspur to pursue instead of Cody Gakpo, particularly considering the situation the Ukrainian international has come out of.

For nearly two years, he has been out of match action and it would require extensive game time for him to get back to his qualities, and whether Spurs can afford to give a new signing that much time is doubtful.

Additionally, Mudryk’s availability on a loan rather than a permanent transfer hints Chelsea believe he will get back to his best, so Tottenham’s possible willingness to sign him would indirectly benefit their arch rivals without adding much value to them.

Gakpo promises to be a high quality addition to the Tottenham squad and although a transfer for him remains conditional to Liverpool acquiring a winger, Mudryk does not promise to be a great alternative.
