Man Utd & Tottenham eye move to sign Freiburg’s Igor Matanovic

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in signing Freiburg striker Igor Matanovic, as per Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport.
After moving to Europa-Park-Stadion from Eintracht Frankfurt last summer, the 23-year-old mainly featured as a rotational option in his debut campaign.
Still, he showcased his productivity, scoring 15 goals and registering four assists in 25 starts across all competitions. The Croatian has even enjoyed a stellar start this season, making four goal contributions in two matches.
Having proven his worth in club football, Matanovic has secured his place in the Croatia national team.
Now, while citing and translating the print version of Gazzetta dello Sport, Sport Witness report that Matanovic’s recent eye-catching performances have attracted Man Utd’s attention.
However, United will have to overcome stiff competition to seal the deal as Tottenham and Fiorentina are also interested in him. With Moise Kean edging closer to joining Como, La Viola want a new striker and have identified Joshua Zirkzee as a serious option alongside Matanovic.
So, it appears United have earmarked Matanovic as a key target to replace the Dutchman. On the other hand, having already signed Omar Marmoush from Manchester City, Tottenham don’t need a new striker anymore.

Matanovic is valued at around £19m by Transfermarkt and still has a contract until 2029. So, Freiburg are in a strong position to demand a big fee if they are forced to cash-in this summer.
Matanovic is a 6ft 6in tall right-footed striker. He is dominant in the air, strong, can hold up the play, and works hard without possession. Moreover, he can link up play and can carry the ball.
The Freiburg star is a talented young forward and possesses high potential. Therefore, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Man Utd should they purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the Old Trafford club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services before the end of this transfer window.
Meanwhile, apart from Zirkzee, United currently have Benjamin Sesko as a striker option. Moreover, Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Marcus Rashford can provide cover in this area if needed.
