According to reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are set to sign Genk goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans in a deal worth £30 million including add-ons.
The Reds currently have Alisson Becker as their undisputed shot-stopper. Giorgi Mamardashvili is the back-up to the Brazilian, but he has been linked with a possible deadline day exit.
Romano now reports that the Merseyside giants have secured an agreement to land Brughmans for £28.3 million plus £1.7m in add-ons.
The 18-year-old is likely to rejoin Genk on a season-long loan deal unless Mamardashvili departs before tonight’s 11pm transfer deadline.
Immediate move
Mamardashvili was signed by the Reds from Valencia in a pre-transfer agreement in the summer of 2024. He formally joined the club last summer and made 20 appearances in all competitions during his debut campaign after Alisson spent time on the sidelines with a muscle injury.
It was anticipated that the Georgian could be a long-term replacement for Alisson, but the Reds continue to consider the latter as a vital player. The 33-year-old produced some fabulous saves against Nottingham Forest recently, and was unlucky to concede a penalty in a 2-2 Premier League draw.
Alisson’s current contract concludes in the June 2027 but looking at the club’s upcoming acquisition of Brughmans, it suggests that the hierarchy are looking to keep the Brazilian star for a longer period. Meanwhile, Mamardashvili has not provided the same reliability as Alisson between the sticks for the Anfield giants, based on his debut season.
Forest have expressed an interest in signing the Georgian in the last few days and could seek to secure his services before tonight’s transfer deadline. In that case, Brughmans could join the Reds immediately as a first-team player. The Belgium Under-19 international had his big breakthrough with Genk during the final phase of the last league campaign.
He had a save success rate of 80 percent in the Pro League last term and looks a bright prospect for the future. If Mamardashvili were to depart, the Belgian youngster could be Alisson’s deputy and may feature in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup competitions under manager Andoni Iraola. He could become the no.1 when Alisson leaves in the long-term.
