Tottenham plot surprise swoop to sign Robert Sanchez

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly considering making a surprise late swoop to sign Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, as per TEAMtalk.

Following Guglielmo Vicario’s inconsistent performances last term, the Lilywhites have decided to refresh the goalkeeping department this summer. After letting the Italian join Juventus, they have signed Martin Dubravka.

The former Newcastle United star is seen as Antonin Kinsky’s deputy. However, the 23-year-old has started the new campaign poorly, conceding six goals in three matches and failing to keep a clean sheet.

As a result, it appears Tottenham want a new goalkeeper. Now, TEAMtalk claim that Roberto De Zerbi’s side are planning to make a surprise swoop to sign Sanchez before tomorrow’s transfer deadline.

After signing Emiliano Martínez from Aston Villa, Chelsea are prepared to cash-in on Sanchez, and intermediaries close to the player have started exploring options to find a suitable destination for him.

Having previously worked under De Zerbi at Brighton, he knows the Italian manager very well. He is valued at around £19m by Transfermarkt and still has a contract until 2030. So, the West London club are in a strong position to demand a sizable amount of money to let him leave.

Since moving to Stamford Bridge from Brighton and Hove Albion, the Spaniard has been the first-choice goalkeeping option, helping his side win the Club World Cup and Conference League.

However, he has displayed inconsistent performances over the years. So, Chelsea have decided to replace him by signing Martínez. The Argentinian even made his Chelsea debut against Brighton on Sunday, helping his side win the game 4-3.

Sanchez is a 6ft 6in tall right-footed goalkeeper. He is comfortable playing out from the back, good in the air, and can play the sweeper-keeper role. However, he has a tendency to make rash decisions and concede poor goals.

Nevertheless, the 28-year-old is an experienced player and could be a shrewd acquisition for Tottenham to add depth to the goalkeeping department should they purchase him.

It is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually opt to secure his services before the end of this transfer window.
