Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez remains linked with a switch to Manchester City in the final few hours of the ongoing transfer window and the Blues are already working in the background to secure the Argentine international’s replacement.
Football Transfers has reported that Chelsea are interested in signing AS Roma star Manu Kone and are in formal talks with the Serie A giants having already agreed on personal terms with the French international.
Gian Piero Gasperini is keen on holding onto the player’s services, as per the source, but there is an agreement expected in the very near future between the two clubs with Jamie Gittens heading the other way in a swap deal.
Roma have valued Kone at £51 million for most of the summer amidst Premier League interest but with Gittens’ inclusion in the swap deal, it remains to be seen how much cash Chelsea are paying for the 25-year-old’s addition.
Kone an excellent signing
Irrespective of whether or not Enzo Fernandez stays at the club, Manu Kone promises to be an excellent signing for Chelsea and could be a decent replacement for Andrey Santos, who was sold to Manchester United, if not the Argentine.
For much of his career at Chelsea, Romeo Lavia has not had a promising fitness record so Kone’s purchase in a defensive midfield position would be vital. He reads the game excellently, has a strong physique and uses his strength well to win duels.
When playing in possession, Kone is effective against opponents who press, has a good stamina which helps him drive with intent into the final third and can exchange short passes with his teammates to create space for himself against tight defences.
It will be interesting to see if Jamie Gittens is open to joining AS Roma in the next few hours but Chelsea can easily afford to match Kone’s asking price in the event of a swap deal not working out.
