Manchester United have received a huge boost to seal a late deal for Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, as per The Athletic.
After reinforcing the frontline by purchasing Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko last year, the Red Devils prioritised overhauling the engine room this summer.
Following Casemiro’s departure and Manuel Ugarte’s serious knee issue, United were left with Kobbie Mainoo as the only available midfield option.
The Old Trafford club have purchased Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, and Carlos Baleba from Chelsea, Aston Villa and Brighton and Hove Albion, respectively, in this window.
Still, it has been suggested that Michael Carrick’s side are also interested in Camavinga. Now, The Athletic report that Real Madrid know about interest in their players from several Premier League teams.
They consider some players untouchable but are prepared to cash-in on Camavinga before today’s 11 pm deadline. Alongside the Frenchman, Los Blancos are also open to letting Raul Asencio leave.
Camavinga is valued at around £43m by Transfermarkt and still has a contract until 2029. So, the Spanish giants are in a strong position to demand a big fee to sell him.
Camavinga to Man Utd
Man Utd currently have four options for two deeper midfield positions. Moreover, Mason Mount can provide cover in this area if needed, although he is a CAM by trait. So, United don’t need a new midfielder.
However, Michael Carrick could do with reinforcing the left-back position as Luke Shaw has had numerous fitness problems over the years and has entered the final few months of his current contract. Patrick Dorgu can play in the left-back position but has been featuring on the flanks under Carrick.
Camavinga is a defensive midfielder by trait but can provide cover in the box-to-box role. Moreover, he is comfortable in the left-back position if needed.
He is quick, technically sound, can dribble past opposition defenders in tight areas, is efficient in playing threading passes between the lines, and solid in defensive contributions.
So, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Man Utd should they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the Old Trafford club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services before the 11 PM transfer window.
