Man Utd make enquiries over late deal to sign Rayan Ait-Nouri

Manchester United have made enquiries over a late deal to sign Algerian fullback Rayan Ait-Nouri this summer, according to Ben Jacobs.

Ait-Nouri began his senior career in France with Angers before Wolves secured his signature on a permanent transfer in the summer of 2021 after he impressed on loan. The Algerian subsequently made 135 league appearances for the West Midlands club before moving to Manchester City last summer.

His time at the Etihad has been less productive, however, with the fullback managing just 17 Premier League appearances during his first season at the club.

Competition for the left-back position has also been fierce, with Josko Gvardiol, Nico O’Reilly and Rico Lewis all capable of operating there. Pep Guardiola’s departure has only added further uncertainty around Ait-Nouri’s future.

Despite struggling to establish himself at club level last season, the 25-year-old enjoyed an impressive individual campaign at the World Cup, indicating he still has immense qualities.

Now, according to Ben Jacobs, Man Utd have made enquiries over a deadline-day move for Ait Nouri.

Late swoop

However, despite United’s interest, Jacobs adds that it is unclear whether United will accelerate their pursuit of the 25-year-old, as City are likely to sanction his departure.

Having returned to winning ways with a dominant 5-2 win over Ipswich Town, Michael Carrick is clearly in need of sufficient depth to help his side compete in the league and in Europe. Left-back remains a key area, and several options have been linked with the club this summer.

The constant links to left-backs come as no surprise due to Tyrell Malacia’s exit, as well as the manager’s preference to deploy Patrick Dorgu higher up, where he has been impressing.

Ait-Nouri would be a good option to compete in that position. Adding the Algerian international would have given the manager not only sufficient backup for Luke Shaw but also a quality option to compete for a starting berth.

However, with Jacobs reporting that City are unlikely to sanction his departure late in the window, United should test their rivals’ resolve by submitting a concrete offer well above his £34m Transfermarkt valuation.
