Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has predicted that Manchester United are going to sign Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton next summer.
After finishing third in the Premier League last campaign, the Red Devils decided to bolster the squad by signing Andrey Santos, Karl Darlow, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba in the recently concluded summer window.
However, United have endured a disappointing start to the Premier League this term, despite facing a relatively favourable fixture schedule. Having lost to Hull City in the opening fixture, Michael Carrick’s side returned to winning ways by thrashing Ipswich Town 5-2.
However, they only managed to come away with a disappointing 2–2 draw against Everton after Ainsley Maitland-Niles scored a late equaliser for the Toffees last weekend. Now, they are set to face Sabah in the Champions League in midweek before taking on Manchester City in the Premier League next Sunday.
Meanwhile, during a live Q&A with AFTV’s Robbie Lyle broadcast on The Obi One Podcast, Obi Mikel says that despite revamping the midfield department by purchasing Santos, Tielemans and Baleba in this window, United could sign Wharton next summer.
The former midfielder further states that he is a big fan of the Englishman and loves his playing style. Wharton is going to reach the top and could leave Crystal Palace next year.
Obi Mikel said:
“I love him! I love Adam Wharton, I’m a big, big fan. I think he’s going to go places, though, I think next season he will leave Crystal Palace. I think they want to keep him for one more season and I see him going to Manchester United next season.”
Wharton to Man Utd
Having moved to Selhurst Park from Blackburn Rovers a couple of years ago, Wharton has enjoyed great success, winning a FA Cup, Conference League and Community Shield.
The 22-year-old is valued at around £60m by Transfermarkt and still has a contract until 2029. Therefore, the South London club are in a strong position to demand a big fee if they are forced to cash-in on him next year.
Wharton is a technically gifted left-footed deep-lying playmaker but can provide cover in the box-to-box role if needed. He has shown glimpses of his qualities in the Premier League in recent times and possesses the potential to become a top-class midfielder in the future.
Therefore, he would be a shrewd acquisition for Man Utd should they eventually opt to lure him to Old Trafford next year.
