Liverpool & Man Utd eye move to sign Malick Thiaw

Liverpool and Manchester United are reportedly keeping a close eye on Newcastle United defender Malick Thiaw, as per Caught Offside.

After being impressed by the 25-year-old’s performances for AC Milan, the Magpies decided to purchase him last summer. Although they endured a disappointing campaign last term, he showed glimpses of his qualities.

In 54 appearances across all competitions, the German scored five goals and registered a solitary assist. Moreover, he helped his side keep nine clean sheets.

Now, Caught Offside claim that with Virgil Van Dijk edging closer towards the end of his career, Liverpool are considering purchasing a new centre-back next summer.

On the other hand, with Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martínez’s long-term future currently uncertain, Man Utd want a new experienced defender to help youngsters like Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven develop.

The Merseyside club and the Old Trafford club have expressed their interest in Thiaw after monitoring his development closely in recent months. The 25-year-old’s strength and ability to defend the channels have impressed Liverpool and Man Utd.

However, the report state that having sold Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes this summer, Newcastle don’t want to lose any of their other star players.

With his existing deal set to run until 2029, Matthias Jaissle’s side aren’t in any rush to sell him and could demand up to £70m to let him leave.

Thiaw is a 6ft 5in tall right-footed centre-back. He is quick, strong, good in the air and comfortable playing out from the back. Moreover, he has the ability to chip in with some important goals and is efficient in defensive contributions.

The Newcastle star is a Premier League-proven player and is currently at the prime stage of his career. Therefore, he would be a great coup for Man Utd or Liverpool should either club purchase him.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the Old Trafford club or the Merseyside club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services next year.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are set to start their Champions League campaign against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night, while United will face Sabah the following day.
