Liverpool are reportedly planning to make a move to sign Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, as per TEAMtalk.
Despite selling Curtis Jones to Inter Milan, the Reds decided not to sign a new midfielder this summer. Instead, they focused on upgrading the flanks and defensive department.
They have purchased Bradley Barcola and Victor Muñoz from Paris Saint-Germain and Osasuna, respectively, to strengthen the frontline. On the other hand, Andoni Iraola’s side have signed Jeremy Jacquet and Ronald Araujo to bolster the backline, with the Uruguayan joining from Barcelona on a season-long loan.
So, Liverpool currently have Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo as options to deploy in the engine room.
But the Japanese has struggled to find regular game time in recent years, while Trey Nyoni can provide cover in this area if needed, but is still very young and needs time to develop.
Now, TEAMtalk claim that Liverpool are considering purchasing a new midfielder to replace Jones next year and are interested in Wharton.
The Reds hold a long-standing admiration for the Crystal Palace star after monitoring his development closely for some time. They value his composure in possession and the ability to play line-breaking passes.
Wharton to Liverpool
The report state that although Wharton is happy at Selhurst Park, he is keen to take the next step in his career and play European football consistently. So, he would be open to leaving in January or next summer.
With the player’s existing deal set to run until 2029, the South London club are in a strong position to demand a big fee if they are forced to cash-in and want more than £75m.
However, TEAMtalk report that Liverpool will have to overcome stiff competition to seal the deal as Newcastle United are also planning to launch a swoop.
The 22-year-old has proven his worth in the Premier League in recent years and possesses the potential to become a top-class midfielder in the future.
Therefore, the Englishman would be a great coup for the Anfield club should they eventually manage to secure his services in January or next summer.
