Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea reportedly made contact over a deal to sign Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini, as per TEAMtalk.
Having struggled with a leaky defence over the last two seasons, the Lilywhites decided to address this issue by signing Marcos Senesi, Jan Paul van Hecke, Tosin Adarabioyo and Andrew Robertson this summer.
Still, Spurs have endured a disappointing start under Roberto De Zerbi this season, conceding 12 goals in seven appearances across all competitions.
After losing to Aston Villa last weekend, Tottenham are currently at the bottom of the Premier League table with two points. They are yet to win a league game this term. On the other hand, De Zerbi’s side have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Liverpool.
As a result, it appears Tottenham continue to explore options to strengthen the backline. Now, TEAMtalk claim that Tottenham are interested in Scalvini and could make a move to sign him in the future.
Spurs hold a long-standing interest in the Italian as they initially approached to buy him this summer. Like Tottenham, Chelsea also held talks over this deal.
However, La Dea eventually managed to keep hold of him and have now agreed to tie the defender down to a fresh long-term contract until 2031.
Battle
But the report state that Premier League clubs haven’t been discouraged by his decision to sign a fresh term as Chelsea and Tottenham continue to show interest in him.
Moreover, Manchester City and Manchester United hold a long-standing interest in Scalvini as they have been keeping a close eye on his development since he was a teenager.
Scalvini is a right-footed, technically gifted centre-back and possesses the potential to reach the top. However, his development has been hampered due to fitness problems in recent years.
Chelsea decided to bolster the backline by signing Maxence Lacroix this summer, but the Blues have struggled with defensive frailties. So, it appears Xabi Alonso wants a new defender.
Scalvini, standing at 6ft 4in tall, would be a shrewd acquisition for Tottenham or Chelsea should either club purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club or the West London club eventually make a concrete approach to services next year.
