Liverpool are reportedly working on a deal to sign Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, as per Football Insider.
Since moving to Anfield from Southampton, Virgil Van Dijk has been an undisputed starter in the left centre-back position over the years. He has helped his side win two Premier League titles, a Champions League and several other major cup competitions.
However, the 35-year-old has reached the twilight of his career, and his existing deal with the Reds is set to expire at the end of this season. So, it appears Andoni Iraola’s side have started exploring options to replace the Dutchman.
Now, Football Insider state that Liverpool are interested in signing Branthwaite, although it would be difficult for them to seal the deal due to the fierce rivalry with Everton.
The Anfield club have already started working to buy Branthwaite, but the Toffees don’t want to let him leave cheaply, having recently tied him down to a fresh term until 2030.
Branthwaite is a 6ft 4in tall left-footed centre-back but can provide cover in the left-back position if needed. He is extremely quick, strong, good in the air, comfortable playing out from the back, and is efficient in defensive contributions.
The Englishman, valued at around £34m by Transfermarkt, has shown glimpses of his high potential in the Premier League but has struggled with fitness problems in recent years.
Branthwaite to Liverpool
Liverpool currently have Giovanni Leoni, Ronald Araujo, Jeremy Jacquet and Joe Gomez as centre-back options alongside Van Dijk. So, Iraola doesn’t have a specialist LCB other than the Dutchman.
On the other hand, Leoni and Gomez have struggled with fitness problems in recent years, while Araujo has joined on loan from Barcelona this summer.
Branthwaite is a talented player and possesses the potential to reach the top if he can stay fit. Therefore, he would be a shrewd acquisition for Liverpool should they purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the Merseyside club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services next year.
Meanwhile, Liverpool have entered the international break with a 1-0 victory over AFC Bournemouth and will resume their campaign against Manchester City in the Premier League next month.
