Liverpool have reportedly joined Chelsea in the race to sign AFC Bournemouth star Alex Scott, as per TEAMtalk.
Despite selling Curtis Jones this summer, the Reds decided not to purchase a new midfielder. As a result, Andoni Iraola currently has Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Trey Nyoni as deeper midfield options.
Wataru Endo can also provide cover in this area if needed but has found himself on the periphery in recent years. On the other hand, Nyoni is still very young and needs time to develop.
As a result, it appears the Merseyside club have started exploring options to replace Jones next year. TEAMtalk claim that Liverpool are interested in Scott, as Iraola knows the player very well, having previously worked together at Vitality Stadium.
However, Chelsea have continued to keep a close eye on him despite their formal proposal being rejected by the Cherries during the summer window.
Scott’s existing deal is set to run until 2028, and Bournemouth don’t want to part ways with him. They plan to keep hold of him by tying him to a new long-term contract.
The report state that Marco Rose’s side are even prepared to include a release clause to persuade him to sign an extension, as he has already turned down a few contract offers.
Battle
Scott is a box-to-box midfielder by trait and has enjoyed a promising start this season. He even showed glimpses of his qualities last term, helping his side qualify for the Europa League by finishing sixth in the Premier League.
After being impressed by his performances, Thomas Tuchel has selected him in the England national team for this September/October international fixtures.
Despite selling Enzo Fernandez on deadline day, Chelsea didn’t reinforce the engine room but are seemingly looking for a new midfielder next year.
Scott, valued at around £43m by Transfermarkt, is a talented player and possesses high potential. So, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Chelsea or Liverpool should either club purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the West London club or the Anfield club eventually manage to secure his services in January or next summer.
