Arsenal plot shock transfer for Real Madrid full back Trent Alexander-Arnold
Arsenal have been one of the world’s best defensive sides under Mikel Arteta and their quality across all positions at the back is undeniable. However, there is still some room for upgrade, especially at right back.
Ekrem Konur has reported that the Gunners are pondering over a surprise switch for Real Madrid right back Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is worth £51 million on Transfermarkt, amidst concerns over Ben White’s reliability as a result of his fitness issues.
Jurrien Timber has also just returned from a lengthy injury layoff and with Alexander-Arnold playing second fiddle to Denzel Dumfries at Real Madrid, it is believed that the Londoners want to test the waters over his signing.
Having been one of the world’s best full backs at Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold’s Madrid career has been marred by fitness issues and now competition from Dumfries, which has cost him a key role not just with the La Liga side but with England too.
Alexander-Arnold a superb addition but transfer a tall order
Given his Premier League experience and sky-high qualities, Trent Alexander-Arnold would be an excellent addition for Arsenal. However, given his Liverpool past, it is unlikely that he will sign for somewhat of a direct Premier League rival.
Having said that, he is also a long-term investment from a Real Madrid perspective. The 27-year-old was brought in to replace Dani Carvajal. While Denzel Dumfries is currently first choice, his form has not been all too impressive either.
Consequently, it is fair to believe Alexander-Arnold and Real Madrid would both be prepared to invest in one another for some more time before calling it quits. From an Arsenal point of view, this means they would need to identify alternatives.
With that in mind, it will be interesting to see how insistent Mikel Arteta is on a right back’s signing, especially with Ezri Konsa a very handy option in the role.
