Chelsea explored deal to sign Barcelona’s Jules Kounde

Chelsea reportedly explored the possibility of signing Barcelona defender Jules Kounde this summer, as per Caught Offside.

After being impressed by the 27-year-old’s performances for Sevilla, the Blaugrana decided to purchase him back in 2022. He has featured regularly in the right-back position at Camp Nou in recent years, winning three La Liga titles and a few domestic cup competitions.

Having proven his worth in club football, Kounde has secured his place in the French national team. Although the defender has played as a rotational option under Hansi Flick this season, he has continued to play a key role for Les Blues.

Now, Caught Offside claim that Barcelona are under pressure to make some sales in January and are prepared to cash-in on Kounde. Chelsea previously explored the possibility of signing the Frenchman this summer but didn’t make a move.

So, it remains to be seen whether they revive their interest. But Kounde, valued at around £51m by Transfermarkt, doesn’t want to leave, with his existing deal set to run until 2030.

Apart from the 27-year-old, Barcelona are prepared to cash-in on Alejandro Balde and Frenkie de Jong but, like Kounde, Balde doesn’t want to leave.

Kounde is a right-footed versatile defender as he is comfortable in the right-back and centre-back positions. He is quick, strong, good in the air, comfortable playing out from the back, and is efficient in defensive contributions.

Kounde to Chelsea

Chelsea decided to reinforce the backline by purchasing Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace this summer. However, Xabi Alonso’s side have struggled with defensive frailties this season.

They have conceded the most goals in the Premier League thus far and are currently languishing in the mid-table, having accumulated only one point from the last three league matches.

As a result, it appears Chelsea are considering upgrading the backline. Kounde is a talented player and is currently at the prime stage of his career.

Therefore, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Chelsea should they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the West London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services in January or next summer.
