Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool are keeping a close eye on Brighton and Hove Albion forward Kaoru Mitoma, as per TEAMtalk.
After moving to AMEX Stadium from Kawasaki Frontale back in 2021, the 29-year-old initially joined Royale Union Saint-Gilloise on loan to play regularly and develop his career.
Upon returning, he has shown glimpses of his qualities in the Premier League in recent years. The Japanese international displayed his best during the 2024/25 campaign, making 15 goal contributions across all competitions.
However, he has struggled with fitness problems in recent months. With his existing deal set to expire at the end of this season, speculation surrounding his future has started emerging.
Now, TEAMtalk claim that Liverpool hold a long-standing interest in Mitoma and have been monitoring his situation closely before making a potential swoop.
On the other hand, Tottenham are keeping a close eye on his situation, as Roberto De Zerbi knows the player very well, having previously worked together at AMEX Stadium.
Although Mitoma has entered the final few months of his current contract, talks regarding a fresh term with Brighton haven’t progressed at all. So, the Seagulls could sell him in a cut-price deal in January to avoid losing him for free next summer.
Battle
However, the report state that Liverpool and Tottenham will have to overcome fierce competition to seal the deal as Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United have all been linked with a move for him.
Following Mohamed Salah’s departure, Liverpool decided to reinforce the flanks by purchasing Bradley Barcola and Victor Muñoz this summer. So, they don’t need a new left-winger unless anyone leaves.
On the other hand, Tottenham bolstered the left-wing by signing Mykhailo Mudryk on loan this summer, but he has struggled with fitness problems.
So, it appears Spurs are considering purchasing a new left-winger. Mitoma is a Premier League-proven player and is currently at the prime stage of his career.
Therefore, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Tottenham or Liverpool should either club purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club or the Merseyside club eventually make a move to sign Mitoma, valued at around £19m by Transfermarkt, next year.
