Manchester United legend Teddy Sheringham has urged his old club to sign Manchester City star Elliot Anderson.
Following Casemiro’s departure as a free agent and Manuel Ugarte’s serious knee injury, the Red Devils decided to revamp the midfield department this summer.
Initially, expensive options like Anderson, Sandro Tonali, Aurelien Tchouameni and Mateus Fernandes were linked with a move to Old Trafford.
However, Man Utd ultimately decided to purchase Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba from Chelsea, Aston Villa and Brighton and Hove Albion, respectively.
Now, during a recent interview, Sheringham states (via Metro) that if Man City face a severe punishment after being found guilty of breaching the Premier League’s financial rules, several of their star players are likely to become available and Man Utd should make a move for one of them.
United don’t have many top players anymore, and the Citizens are filled with them. Michael Carrick’s side could have a second chance to buy Anderson, with a big opportunity on the horizon.
Sheringham said:
“Could Manchester United get a second chance to sign Elliot Anderson? I think there’s going to be a lot of top players available at Manchester City, and Anderson is definitely one of them. I love him. I can’t believe anyone has question marks over him.
“He is a fantastic player, and he was brilliant again for England against Spain. They’re all at the other clubs, a lot of them are Manchester City players, so there’s a big opportunity on the horizon for United now.”
Man Utd urged to sign Anderson
After displaying impressive performances at Nottingham Forest, Anderson decided to join Man City this summer. He has continued to showcase his qualities at the Etihad Stadium, helping his side win all five Premier League matches before the international break.
Having proven his worth in club football, Anderson has established himself as an undisputed starter in the England national team’s starting line-up.
He is a deep-lying playmaker by trait but is also comfortable in the box-to-box role. He is dynamic, technically sound, can play threading passes between the lines and is efficient in delivering excellent crosses.
The 23-year-old has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League and would be a shrewd acquisition for Man Utd should they eventually manage to purchase him.
