Tottenham linked with move to sign Antonio Rudiger from Real Madrid

Tottenham Hotspur are pondering over a move for Real Madrid centre-back Antonio Rüdiger, according to Football Insider.

Tottenham invested heavily to strengthen several areas of their squad last summer, including defence; they secured the free transfers of Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi, while Jan Paul van Hecke also joined in a big-money move.

In an equally ambitious move, Micky van de Ven also extended his contract amid interest from several clubs, ensuring Roberto De Zerbi has the quality and personnel to compete this season.

However, six games into the season, it is clear the club still needs more than reinforcement; it needs an experienced player to help it out of a difficult position, as it currently sits in 19th place.

With over 100 Premier League appearances and a trophy-laden career at the highest level, Rüdiger would be a suitable option to bring his qualities, leadership and experience to help stabilise De Zerbi’s backline.

As a result, it’s no surprise Football Insider now claims that Tottenham are exploring a move for the German international next summer.

Having shown interest in the centre-back last summer, Spurs are still closely monitoring him and could launch a swoop to sign him before the expiration of his contract this season, according to the report.

‘Phenomenal’ centre-back

While concerns remain over his age, the report adds that the North Londoners will not rule out adding an experienced player who suits their squad, as shown by their additions of Robertson and Senesi, and are big admirers of Rüdiger’s experience.

Should Tottenham decide to make their move formal, they will need to act swiftly to convince the 33-year-old to join them, as Football Insider reports that the 6ft 3in former Chelsea defender is most likely to move to the Saudi Pro League.

Rüdiger was one of the most pragmatic defenders in the Premier League during his time at Chelsea, where he was described as ‘phenomenal’ by Rio Ferdinand.

His renowned one-on-one ability and combative tackling made him an indispensable figure in the Blues’ backline, where he played key roles in the club’s FA Cup, Europa League, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup titles.

While he may not be a regular starter, given that he will turn 34 in March, his vocal leadership and experience are exactly what Tottenham need in the dressing room, and he would also provide a reliable option on the pitch whenever called upon.
