Man Utd keeping tabs on Fulham centre-back Calvin Bassey

Manchester United are keeping tabs on Fulham centre-back Calvin Bassey ahead of a potential swoop to Old Trafford, according to TEAMtalk.

The 26-year-old, described as ‘outstanding’ by former Nigeria national team assistant coach Sylvanus Okpala, has been one of Fulham’s most consistent players and has played a key role in helping the club retain their top-flight status since arriving from Ajax in the summer of 2023.

He has played in 112 games for the Cottagers and was particularly instrumental in the 2024-25 season squad that recorded 54 points, their highest-ever point tally in the Premier League since the 2008-09 campaign, where they accumulated 53.

In the ongoing campaign, the Nigerian has been an ever-present figure at the back, featuring in all nine Premier League games for Alvaro Arbeloa’s side that are unbeaten in their last three Premier League games.

They have also shown remarkable resilience against some of the big sides, dominating Chelsea in a 3-2 loss while remaining unbeaten against Liverpool, Man Utd, and, most recently, Aston Villa.

Against Villa, Bassey was yet again at his combative best, earning a 6.60 rating, the third-highest in the game, only behind Nicolas Jackson (7.69) and teammate Oscar Bobb (6.95).

However, the game against the Villains wasn’t his only standout display; it reflects his standard throughout the season, where he averages 5.44 duels won per game.

It’s no surprise his consistent performances are attracting interest, with TEAMtalk reporting that Man Utd are keeping tabs on Bassey ahead of a potential transfer to Old Trafford.

‘Outstanding’ centre-back

The report adds that United’s hierarchy have been impressed by the 26-year-old’s form, and the club is now showing growing interest.

With Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire’s contracts set to expire next summer, United are looking to carry out an extensive defensive rebuild and have earmarked Bassey as a viable option, citing his Premier League experience and ability to play in different positions at the back, according to the report.

However, United will face stern competition in the race, as TEAMtalk adds that Newcastle United, Everton, Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig are also interested in the 6ft 1in centre-back.

Bassey’s contract at Craven Cottage is set to run out at the end of the season, although Fulham have the option to extend his deal by one year.

While waiting until his deal runs out makes more economic sense, the Red Devils need immediate defensive restructuring and should therefore offer the West London club a fee around his £23m Transfermarkt valuation to beat other interested clubs in the race for his signature.
