Man Utd interested in signing Barcelona star Fermin Lopez

According to The Daily Mail, Manchester United are interested in signing Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez as they seek to bolster their attack during the winter transfer window.

The Red Devils have had a frustrating campaign thus far and they are currently lying in the bottom half of the standings. On top of this, the club have suffered a massive setback with Benjamin Sesko ruled out until January with a shin injury.

It may also take several weeks for him to rebuild his fitness which means he may not be a starter until February or potentially March. United have been looking at the prospect of signing Leeds United’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin, but a deal appears unlikely.

The Yorkshire outfit are unlikely to negotiate with a fierce rival while the striker also appears close to penning a new deal.

Amidst this, the Red Devils have been linked with a surprise move for Barcelona’s Lopez, who is primarily an attacking midfielder. He has been long on the radar of Man United and remains a target ahead of the January transfer window.

Fernandes replacement

United have lacked sufficient creativity in the final third this campaign. Captain Bruno Fernandes has suffered a dip in his performances and has only made goal contributions against Ipswich Town in the Premier League so far.

The playmaker’s current deal expires in June next year but United have the option to extend for another 12 months. With no renewal being agreed thus far, it is quite possible that the Portuguese sensation could head for the exit door next summer.

United may be seeking a successor through Lopez. They could seek to sign him in January so that he can adapt to the Premier League before potentially cementing the number 10 position with Fernandes’ possible departure.

Lopez is primarily an attacking number midfielder, who can also operate from the left wing. He had a terrific 2025/26 season at Barcelona with 30 goal contributions from 48 appearances before a foot injury before the World Cup.

The Spaniard sadly missed the global tournament as a result, but he has returned in fine form with nine goal involvements in 12 matches.

United may have the ambition to recruit him but the finances involved could mean that a mid-season deal may be unlikely.

Lopez is valued at a hefty £92 million by Transfermarkt, and Barcelona could demand a higher fee if the 23-year-old pushes for an exit.

We believe United may have to wait until the summer before making a huge outlay on the La Masia graduate.
