Liverpool make approach to sign Chelsea’s Levi Colwill

Liverpool have reportedly made an approach to sign Chelsea defender Levi Colwill, as per TEAMtalk.
Since moving to Anfield from Southampton, Virgil Van Dijk has been an undisputed starter at left centre-back. He has enjoyed great success over the years, winning two Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy and several other major cup competitions.
However, the 35-year-old is in the twilight of his career and has entered the final months of his current contract. Apart from the Dutchman, Liverpool currently have Joe Gomez, Ronald Araujo, Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet as centre-back options.
Leoni has been out injured for more than a year, while Araujo has mainly featured as a right-back this season. On the other hand, Jacquet likes to be deployed in the right centre-back position.
Gomez, meanwhile, has entered the final year of his current contract like Van Dijk. As a result, it appears the Merseyside club have started exploring options to sign a new LCB.
TEAMtalk claim that Liverpool hold a strong interest in Colwill and have already made an approach over this deal. Apart from the Reds, Tottenham Hotspur have also made checks to sign him.
However, Chelsea have no intention of parting ways with him as they consider him a key part of their long-term future. He still has a contract until 2029, with the Blues holding an option to extend the deal further. Still, Chelsea are planning to hand him a fresh contract.
Colwill to Liverpool
Colwill, valued at around £42m by Transfermarkt, is a left-footed centre-back by trait but is also comfortable in the left-back position. He has been mainly featuring as a LCB under Xabi Alonso in his back three system this season.
After coming through Chelsea’s youth system, he went out on loan to Huddersfield Town and Brighton and Hove Albion to play regularly and develop his career.
However, he has now secured his place in Chelsea’s starting line-up. After recovering from his long-term knee issue, Colwill has been playing regularly this season.
The 23-year-old is a talented player and could be a shrewd acquisition for Liverpool should they eventually manage to lure him away from Stamford Bridge next year.
