Liverpool set sights on signing Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen

Liverpool have reportedly set their sights on signing Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, as per Football Insider.

After moving to AMEX Stadium from Anderlecht in 2023, the 24-year-old initially featured as a rotational option before establishing himself as a key starter.

Last season, he showed glimpses of his qualities in the Premier League, keeping 10 clean sheets with a 70% save rate in 38 appearances. Moreover, he helped his side qualify for the Conference League.

Verbruggen has even enjoyed a promising start this season, guiding his side to a top four finish in the Premier League. Having proven his worth in club football, he has established himself as Netherlands’ first-choice goalkeeper.

Now, Football Insider report that with Alisson Becker’s existing deal set to run until next summer, Liverpool have started exploring options to buy a new goalkeeper.

After being impressed by Verbruggen’s development at Brighton, Liverpool are strong admirers of him and could make a move to secure his services next year.

The Seagulls usually play hardball to let their big assets leave, and considering he still has a contract until 2028, they are expected to demand a big fee if they are forced to cash-in.

Verbruggen to Liverpool

Verbruggen is a 6ft 4in tall right-footed goalkeeper. He is comfortable playing out from the back, good in the air, and is a solid shot-stopper. Moreover, he can play the sweeper-keeper role.

The Dutchman has shown glimpses of his qualities in the Premier League in recent years and hasn’t reached his prime yet. Therefore, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Liverpool should they purchase him.

Apart from Alisson, Liverpool currently have Giorgi Mamardashvili as a goalkeeping option. But the former Valencia star has failed to break into the starting line-up.

On the other hand, Andoni Iraola’s side signed Lucca Brughmans from KRC Genk last summer, and he will arrive ahead of next campaign.

Nevertheless, it is going to be interesting to see whether the Merseyside club eventually manage to lure Verbruggen, valued at around £34m by Transfermarkt, to Anfield in January or next summer.

Meanwhile, following Liverpool’s fixture vs Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, the November international break will commence.
