[VOTE] Should Arsenal Buy Joey Barton?

By on June 20, 2011

Arsenal have been linked to the controversial Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton, with reports suggesting that Arsene Wenger has shown an interest in Barton and contacted Newcastle about acquiring his services. Barton has only a year remaining on his current contract, and he has been told by the Northern club that his deal will not be renewed, leaving Barton looking for a new club for the future.

Wenger’s interest suggests a change in philosophy, as the 28 year-old Englishman is renowned for his tenacity and tough tackling on the field as well as his controversial actions off it. This is in stark contrast to Arsenal’s seamless passing style which often means the Arsenal players are victims of tough tackles which Wenger is so opposed to.

However, Barton has shown in his time at Newcastle that he is far more mature than his early days as a footballer, and is ready to make up for lost time from back when he was a regular in court and therefore missing for football training and matches at Manchester City.

He was vital in Newcastle’s promotion to the Premier League and their securing of a place in it last season, and has shown that he is an excellent motivator and leader in a football team -a quality which has been lacking at Arsenal in their disappointing and trophy less last few seasons.

Some Arsenal fans may remain sceptical over his on and off-field antics, with him still being branded a “thug”, especially after the incident against Blackburn last season in which he hit, punched, harshly shoved, whatever you want to call it, Morten Gamst Pederson in the chest.

Would Wenger be able to defend these kinds of actions? Could he control Barton’s behaviour? Could he nurture him into a quality midfielder? Should Arsenal attempt to buy him, or are there better options? Have your say.

i dont know about energy but hes a nasty player that we can use against nasty teams that just want to injure us. the likes of stoke, manu, etc. but we must get samba and gervinho first. the prem condones kicking and hacking players down. arsenal have no player like this. barton reminds me of roy keane.

Unfortunately to Bartons CV you have to add racist thug, under skilled and classless.
He isnt good enough to intimidate the oppos (a good thing) without getting sent off or assaulting on of his team members.
I would find the sight of him in an AFC shirt vomit inducing to say the least.

We do not need a player like Barton. He would cause more frictions in the dressing room than anyone ever at the Arsenal.

We dont actually need a player like Barton. AW Should look for Parker instead. Signing Barton seems like funny to say

Parker is much preferable to scum like Barton. He is a better player and the team would really benefit with him being there. If Parker is good enough for Lee Dixon, then Wenger should take note, after all,Dixon knows a bit about football!

Barton would be a great buy for 1.5 mill he always puts in a shift he ain’t scared of anyone and when people go in on him it lifts his game. He makes people around him work and he is a good player as long as he keeps on putting his head down and cracks on. The other thing that I don’t get is barca r trying to off load d villa to man c and Chelsea what’s wrong with a straight swap for cesc him and van is a def 40 plus goals a season before a whistle is even blown

Regarding Joey Barton, theres nothing wrong with a few nutcases in the side too many pussies ie Sagna and Walcott

Sign him…we wont be conceding 4 goals in the last 20 mins of a game with him in the side.

Plus he will stop us losing the ball on the edge of our area after every single corner and freekick that miraculously gets partially blocked.

The Refs don’t like us and now you want to bring in a player that the Refs hate. He’d spend more time suspended than any other player in the history of football.

scott parker i think would be a good buy for arsenal but he is 30 years old you got to remember that where as a barton is 28 and only costing 1.5 mill compared to prob bout 10 to 14 mill because of the awards he won, i think that arsenal need a barton more than a parker

We could use with a player of his mental state in the side. Yes he’s unlikeable but he’s cheap, will put a shift in and bully the opposition should he need to. Something we haven’t had a player like that since Viera. All our players are too likeable we need some d**kheads in the side.

Oh Lord! Please AW, leave this guy alone. He needs to be in a place with padded walls rather than a football field!
