Spurs Edge Ahead Of Arsenal In Defender Pursuit

By on June 22, 2011

Tottenham have joined the race to sign Bolton’s £17million rated defender Gary Cahill, but face tough competition from local rivals Arsenal and mega-rich Manchester City.

Bolton manager Owen Coyle would prefer a player plus cash deal, with the majority of the Cahill money expected to go towards reducing the clubs £90m debt.

The Sun reports that Coyle has resigned to losing his classy defender, but insists the England international will not be leaving on the cheap.

“He won’t be going on the cheap, that’s for sure.

“Gary could play for anyone and looking at a few of the deals that are going on right now, it surprises me there hasn’t been a concrete offer.”

Tottenham gaffer Harry Redknapp is set to offer Sebastien Bassong plus cash for Cahill, with an alternative of Danny Rose going to the Rebook on loan.

Rose could intrigue Coyle, who has already help progress the development of Jack Wilshire and Danny Strurridge who both excelled whilst on loan at the Rebook.

Great news today, neither Odemwingie nor Cahill will move to Arsenal! Such news are scarce these days. Neither of these players would ever make it at Emirates. They’re good, but the drawbacks could prove disastrous, besides, neither is the answer to Arsenal’s problems.

I really don’t understand how Bolton can ask for £17 million pounds for a player that is in the last year of his contract. Its pure madness. How much is he worth then if he had 4 or 5 years on his contract, £40 million? I say go for Samba and/or Sahko and forget these overpriced and overrated English players…

There is no reason to believe the squad will be any stronger next term, we’ve gone pear shaped at Arsenal.
