Is Meireles Leaving To Make Way For The Returning Aquilani?

By on June 28, 2011

Is Raul Meirles potentially being sold by Liverpool FC to make way for Rafa Benitez’s downfall in Alberto Aquilani?

Signed by Roy Hodgson last season in a £10.5 million deal, the Portugese International had an exceptional second-half of the season under Kenny Dalglish, scoring five great goals in 31 appearances for the Reds.

His work-rate, passing and link ups in midfield were brilliant, he had an excellant delivery from corners and free-kicks and he was central to our charge up the table in the season just past.

However, strong rumours in the press suggest that Liverpool are willing to sell Liverpool’s Player of the Year to Juventus for £13 million.

I find this staggering, yes Liverpool have a clutter of midfielders right now, but surely selling one of our best players is strange to say the least. The player himself is said to be deeply unhappy about the situation, having signed on a low temorary wage to see how he would adapt to the Premiership.

Well he has adapted admirably and ,in my view, he should be kept on at Anfield for the long-term. Maybe, the problem is the return of Alberto Aquilani, the last signing/mistake of Rafa Benitez reign?

Aquilani has been on loan at Juventus all season, but they don’t want to sign him, no other clubs are interested in taking him, thus far, so Alberto looks to be heading back to Anfield. And maybe that has forced Liverpool’s hand a bit, they are trying to reduce the huge payroll and poor old Meireles looks to be the first casualty.

While they are at it , they should also look at selling Joe Cole, Milan Jovanovic, Christain Poulson as well. Time to get rid of the squad players on £100,000 a week, and more.

I keep hearing people quoting this story about Meireles leaving and i’ve heard nothing substantial. People are guessing because Henderson arrived and other central midfielders have been linked however i don’t believe it to be true. Meireles is a multi-position player just because more depth is being brought in doesn’t mean we must sacrifice it straight away. I would think players like Jovanovic and Cole would be sold before Meireles.

luis suarez was the biggest factor for last season not raul, also kuyt put a good run of games together, people are forgetting gerrard will be back aswell as whoever comes in, meirelles is a typical continental player his heading and tackling are weak we cant have him and lucas fouling and jumping out of tackles all over the place, we will not miss raul so stop all the moaning

Raul should’t be the fall guy here!
sell Lucas and the other dead wood to finance Mata and Lennon. Can’t believe we rather sell Raul to bring in Charlie and Steward! Sell Lucas For God’s sake!

Lucas was class last season, ran the game against Arsenal and has come into his own now Mascherano has left. Personally I would have Raul and Alberto and not Charlie Adams? We need some wingers and a left back (maybe a striker to replace Ngog) not more central midfielders

    Stevie, Lucas, Raul, Aquilani, Spearing,
    Poulsen, Hendo

Stevie won’t be sold, neither will Lucas given his great form, Spearing happy to be a squad player so he won’t go, Hendo just in (but a right mid at this point anyway). Poulsen should go leaving a choice between Aquilani and Raul. If we could get £13m for Alberto we would sell but with no one willing to pay half that fee and his wages, we might have to sell Raul instead. Also keep in mind if he stays, he wants a big pay rise…

In my view, Meireles is a decent player, but he would at most be a squad player in a side that’s capable of finishing near top of the league.
Obviously all the deadwood needs to go too, but Meireles will be the one that actually makes a decent transfer fee for us for couple reasons
    1. Relatively successful season
    2. His wages are lower, so more open to a move.

Lucas on the other hand is not dead wood. He is by no means a world beater, but he is the oily senior DM at the club. If he gets an injury, the nearest thing to a DM we have is Jay Spearing. Lucas can’t be sold unless we buy 2 top DM’s,which is unlikely. If we buy one, they can compete for the spot.
Obviously we have no senior LB wo can stay fit but As it stands, Lucas is the outfield player we’d have no replacement for if it acme to an injury, as other defenders cam cover 2 fullback positions.

All these xbox and ps3 experts on different footy forums suggesting teams with no DM, just don’t understand how football is played in the top flight with attacking full backs and one two DMs. Who has any success in the league without dedicated DMs in almost every game except ManU?

They should sell Gerard not Miereles (Gerrard is older than Miereles and the team needs to freshen up because Gerard has too much influence and everybody is looking at him which when he doesn’t deliver the whole team fails). He is old and always injured similar to Aqua (though Aqua played more games when he was healthy last season in Italy). As for others dead woods, Cole, Milan, Maxi, All those who were loaned last year (the older players not the youngsters), Greek giant, even Agger (injury prone) and Carra (will be part time player because of Age) should not be spared. Liverpool needs to have more younger player and some who are worth what they are getting paid. Like Milan and Cole are getting paid truckloads of money but aren’t even able to compete for the first team. Just a thought from an OLD AND FRUSTRATED LIVERPOOL SUPPORTER WHO DREAMS OF THE 70S AND 80S LIVERPOOL TEAM WHEN THERE WAS MEAT NOT VEGETABLES ON THE GAMES OF LIVERPOOL.

Am i the only person to think that Lucas did not improve a tad bit?
Those that voted him as liverpools best player of the season have got some sticky gelatinous like mucus in their eyes.
What rubbish? Lucas is tactically inept, brings no creative spark to the midfield, loses posession easily & slow at retrieving the ball, his passes are intercepted & his tackles are tough though timeless. However the only thing admirable about him is that he is tiredlessly working like dirk kuyt and as yet, he is still below average at best for a liverpool side. God, It is beginning to appear like his backers did so clearly out of sympathy. Keep meireles and we shouldnt sell azquilani at a cut price, he performed well at juve by all accounts, i think they want him on the cheap probably because he expressed his desire to stay in italy…

you’re probably not the only one (some people won’t change their mind no matter how good a player performs), but your definitly in the the minority. Lucas performed the most number of successful tackles in the EPL last year. His job is not to bring ‘creative spark’ to the midfield it’s to win the ball back and support the defence. Considering when we signed him he was an attacking midfield player, to completely change how he’s played for who knows how long is some acheivement.

Same mistackes all over again. Remember what heapend when we sold Alonso? Without good DM there is no way to have succesfull squad. We did mistacke with Sisoko, Alonso, Mascherano(athough he wanted to leave) and now same thing will heapend if we sell Meireles. Lucas has no capacity to play and make diference. he is sometimes Ok but thats all. He can not develope any more and be better than he is right now…and he is not extra player. Selling Meireles who was one of the best players last season without is stupid.
