REPORTS: Arsenal Submit Bid But Liverpool Remain In Pole Position

By on July 11, 2011

Arsenal have lodged an £18million bid for Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing, according to Sky Sports News.

Downing is believed to be subject to a tug-of-war between Liverpool and Arsenal who are set to battle it out for Downing’s signature. Liverpool have already had a £15million bid rejected from Villa and are reportedly set to submit an improved offer.

With the futures of Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas and Frenchman Samir Nasri still unclear, it’s widely acknowledged that Wenger will have to recruit this summer to ensure a squad fit enough to challenge for the top four let alone the Championship.

Downing has been identified as a possible replacement for Nasri who is set for a move to either Manchester club or Chelsea. Liverpool are favourites to land the former Middlesbrough wide man as Merseyside remains his preferred destination according to reports on Sky Sports, and a deal to Liverpool could be finalised early this week.
