Liverpool Must Act Now And Snap Up £20m Downing

By on July 11, 2011

With the news emerging that Arsenal have joined the race to sign Stewart Downing, it is vital that Daniel Comolli proves his worth and FSG sign the winger as soon as possible.

Alex McLeish has publicly stated that the England International was ”not for sale”, but this is viewed as a sop to the Villa Park fans, having already seeing Ashley Young to Man Utd this Summer.

It is known that Aston Villa would be prepared to listen to offers of £20 million for the talented 26 year old. Liverpool have been pursuing the player in the past few weeks, having first tabled an offer of £12 million then increasing that bid to £15 million, but now that Arsenal have entered the market for Downing with an £18 million bid, although Villa have denied this.

It really is time for all concerned at Anfield to stop messing around, offer Randy Learner the £20 million he wants and get the lad signed. We have already lost out on Conor Wickham and Phil Jones to other clubs so now is the time to act decisively and secure Downing who says he wants to play for Liverpool.

Is your name really John Toher or John Tosser?

A couple of weeks ago Liverpools owners made a statement that everyone in the world heard except it seems for you.

He stated that In case you need reminding:

he Reds will be looking at players who can fulfill its long-term ambitions rather ones to cater for the immediate future.

“Speculation on players shouldn’t include those of a certain age,” he wrote on Twitter.

“We are not going to be successful by merely filling short-term needs at LFC.”

In other words we will not be paying anything over £15m for a 27year old winger with maybe 3 years of fitness and speed available. At £20m which apparently Villa say isn’t enough they want £25M, but anyway at £20m it would cost us at least £7.5m per including wages per year for 3 years with no chance of recouping anything for him.

I am no manager but surely why pay over inflated price for downing when their is n’zogbia and Bastos both under 10 million who are quicker and proven quality! We have been linked to both so buy them and get mata all for 30 million. If we buy downing only who plays on other wing? It’s been said year after year that wingers are needed so fuckin buy them we also need centre back and left back as well as quality striker to back Carroll and Suarez if they get injured our squad is still poor and man united has more depth and quality. And why did we buy Jordan Henderson for 16 million a waste of money we have gerrard, Lucas and merieles as well as spearing and shelvey so wot the fuck maybe I should manage them cos I can see clearly wot is wrong!!!

I agree £15m is probably top end for Downing anything after that is a waste of money. Surely there’s a proven crosser of the ball from the left flank at better value than that. Mata is not the width we’re looking for but would be a great addition to any team.

Liverpool can take their time, Arsenal don’t want him, just a ridiculous rumor possibly purposely-released to up his price! must be 10 years now since Wenger even went over £15m for a player. No other club in the world is going to bid more than what Liverpool have already bid for him.

We paid £20 million for Henderson and £35million for Carroll although there young there not proven great players yet!!! I think we should sign downing for £20 million he would be a great player for Liverpool and he’s hitting his peak now.
    Kenny knows what he’s doing

35,000,000 for Carroll was maybe ten times what he’s worth. The Henderson figure was also absurd. Adam is EASILY the best of the three and his price was very reasonable. More deals like that please.

As a Villa fan, I agree with Robbie.
Downing had a great season in a mediocre Villa side last year and is definitely worth £20 mill when you compare him to Henderson.
I really don’t understand the negativity from you Pool fans, he’d be great for you, imo.
Not that we want him gone (the judas side to him apart).

And didn’t Mata say he wants to go to a club playing in the CL?

when you read these comments you would think a million pounds is pocket money yet most of these guys writing in would haggle for a few hundred off their next car. Every pound/dollar FSG save on one signing may well lead to another. If downing isn’t worth 20 mil then FSG won’t pay it and the world will go on turning.

Michel bastos for cheaper then downing.. what a joke, i would go for bastos any day of the weak, sure he is not proven in the EPL but he could come over for about 13-15 mill. And can play LWB LW LM and even SS. We need a couple of game changers not another average player

i always get angry when ever i read all these sought of headlines about lfc to 20mill.p.on downing, well kenny and comolli have already made a bad move for buying hendersen for 20.mill. which surposed not to be so that’s why all the club now want to used that as a yard stick on all the players lfc are going for,why not forget downing and buy -CHARLES NZOGBIA-with maybe 7 or 8mill.then buy DIEGO from wolfsbourg and we [lfc]will still some balance in our account to buy a striker like KARIM BENZEMA,or a top quality striker to add up with CAROLL and SUAREZ.

Not only has Arsenal denied a bid but Villa has also said they have not made a bid! get the facts straight before reporting what should be news!
