Arsenal Transfer News: Two Dominant Defender’s Linked | Record Bid Reports

By on July 12, 2011

There has been some quite interesting and fascinating transfer rumors, gossip, news and speculation flying around the last few days surrounding the Gunners. There is one interesting piece of news regarding Arsenal’s interest in Stewart Downing. Without further ado, here is the Arsenal Transfer News Roundup.

Arsenal Interested In Mertesacker

According to several German reports, Arsenal are interested in signing German international center back, Per Mertesacker, from Werder Bremen. The Gunners have been linked with the 6’6″ German international for several seasons now, and are reportedly willing to pay 7 million pounds to sign him, who’s contract expires in 12 months time. Mertesacker is an experienced, tall and a very good defender when he’s focused and at his best.

This season, however, Mertseacker has been absolutely dreadful and was exposed numerous times for his lack of pace, which is why I’m not so keen on seeing him as a Gunner, especially as the Premier League is known for its quick pace and high tempo.

Ogbonna Interesting the Gunners

According to Italian reports, the Gunners are interested in signing Italian U-21 and Torino central defender, Angelo Ogbonna. They also state that Arsenal will have to pay up to 14 million pounds to sign him. Ogbonna is a talented defender, known for his physical presence and a solid tackler.

This season, however, Ogbonna wasn’t at his best this season and was criticized for his inconsistency and lack of concentration. Also, Ogbonna is still relatively inexperienced and I believe that the Gunners should be going for an experienced, quality defender.

Arsenal Launch Record Bid For…. Downing?

According to Sky Sports, the Gunners have launched a record bid to sign Aston Villa winger, Stewart Downing. The bid was around 18 million pounds, which breaks the record fee set for Andriy Arshavin which is around 16.5 million. However, Aston Villa have since refuted these claims.

Anyway, I honestly hope that this isn’t true, I believe that Downing is overrated and not worth 18 million, especially as it’s a record fee. Downing is inconsistent and not the player we should be going after. If we’re willing to break our transfer fee, it would’ve to be for a top quality player, and Downing doesn’t fit that bill in my opinion.

What do you think? Should Wenger go for Mertesacker or Ogbonna? Do you think that Wenger should go for Downing and that he’s worth the record fee?

Please share your thoughts and opinions.

not these two – both poor last season???

mertesacker does not have the pace

its gary cahill or chris samba – both premiership expierence, both have pace and physical expierence and are organisers

weve only spent about £5 million after clichy transfer

pay up the 17 million for cahill or the 12 million for samba – the ££££ is there – bendtner and almunia are on their way out

c’mon arsenal, wenger and gazidas – stop being so bloody tight!!!!

Why insist on the media speculation for Cahill or Samba – these are not Champions League material. Both good players and could do a job for their teams. Cahill has only just started to get noticed at 25 but was discarded by O’Niel at Villa. Once of these woudl be good in place for Squillaci but you need a tall clear header defender like Metersecker. There are many top defenders in the EPL that are not fast. That’s why we have a pacey partner in Vermalen and with Sagna and Gibbs on the wing they can chase down runners with metersecker closing the door before they reach the keeper.

i think wenger should concestrate more on the signing of cahill from bolton.Because of premier league experience his presence in the squad will greatly help us to be successful in the upcoming season.

I disagree with all of you, we need a coach who really got reader of a game like alex, all our failures in the last six years cause of poor plan for the game, if we look at last season how many times we failed to hold on our win games e.g with spurs at home with Newcastle 4 up to get 4 drow……. Wenger is to poor in tactics…..

im a villa fan , cahill was great at the villa and it was a shock for most villa fans when mon sold him and then went and spent 10m on curtis (im a pub player) davis. he would be class for arsenal and i only wish we could get him back to villa.

    Hey Wenger,

Either Samba or Cahill or Vortenghen or Mertesacker or any 2 of them. What about Mata, Hazard and Benzema? Please hurry up. We are in the professional transfer market looking for quality players who will make their presence felt on the ground. We are not looking for tomatoes and onions that you’ll wait for the price to be affordable. I hope we’ll not just keep on waiting until other clubs sign them.

Am fed up now. Comme on Wenger don’t be so cruel.

Get rid of Fabregas wheter he wants to stay or not, Bedneter, Deilson, Rosicky, Eboue, Squilachi, aarsharvin, vela

That should bring in 65 million – i would then go for
    Leighton Baines
    Gary Cahill
    Scott Parker
    Benzema

Tom I totally agree with you only I would add almunia, juroo and kolchelny. Arsenal Fans dont realise their power. We are the biggest club in the most famous city in the world. ARSENAL is MASSIVE. The emirates is the most expensive stadium in the world and the the most profitable. The only reason the board get away with it is because we let them. I have been writing letters of complaint to that Booard for years to no avail. I am serious are any of you with me. How many people would be with me if I started a serious and sustained protest going until we see REAL change. Please tell me

I’m so sick of not winning anything for so many years and it’s hurt so much to see the club I love being turned into a joke.
I’m in India so I’m not sure how much help I can be but I’m in for what it’s worth.

Since when do you need pace to defend a free-kick?

I’m tired of hearing how “slow” Mertersacker is because Kos and Djourou are both reasonably pacy players and a hell of alot of good that did for us on the way to conceding 53% of our goals from set pieces last season.

We have the most possession of any team in the league, conceding from open play is less likely when the opposition hardly has the ball. However it only takes one corner or free-kick and they statistically have a 50% chance of scoring on us.

I HAVE TRIED MY BEST TO UNDERSTAND ARSENE WENGER,BUT THIS GUY HAS GOT ME BEAT,I’M QUITE PLEASED WE HAVE SIGNED THE NEW STRIKER, HE LOOKS THE PART BUT I
SUPPOSE ANYTHING IS BETTER THAN BENDTNER
BUT WOULD SOMEONE PLEASE TELL THE
PROFESSOR,IT’S NOT A PROBLEM US SCORING
GOALS,THE PROBLEM IS,THE BALL HITTING THE BACK OF OUR NET,AND THEY CALL IT “DEFENCE”I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT A SIX
MILLION A YEAR SALLARY MAN WOULD HAVE
KNOWN THAT.PULL YOUR FINGER OUT ARSENE,
AND GET THAT DEFENCE SORTED OUT.
