Wenger Set To Disappoint Arsenal Fans Once More This Summer

Arsene Wenger does not believe that Arsenal need to buy new players to strengthen his side defensively. He maintains that although Arsenal’s defence does need improving from last year, new additions will not be needed to help the issue.

Wenger believes the return of Thomas Vermaelen will make a big difference to Arsenal’s solidity at the back, and the problem lies with the poor defending from set-pieces. The Arsenal manager said:

“I don’t think we are weak defensively, but we are an offensive team. Sometimes that exposes our defenders a bit more than other teams.”

“I believe we have quality defenders. One is Thomas Vermaelen and he did not play last year. In open play, we were one of the better defences [last season], but we conceded too many goals on set-pieces and that is where we want to improve this season.”

Arsenal conceded the most goals inside the top four in the Premier League last season, with 43 goals being fired past Sczcesny, Almunia and Fabianski. Despite being linked strongly to several defenders including Bolton’s Gary Cahill, Blackburn’s Chris Samba and Werder Bremen’s Per Mertesacker, it now doesn’t look like Wenger will listen to loud cries from sections of Arsenal fans and pundits to invest in another top quality defender.

It is understandable that Wenger has renewed confidence in his defence now that Thomas Vermaelen is back in action, but the problem remains with the possibility of injuries. The addition of Charlton’s Carl Jenkinson to the Arsenal side isn’t exactly a signing which will inspire immediate confidence into Arsenal fans, who may be worried that if the injuries strike again, Wenger will have few top class options to call on to step in.

It is a big risk for Wenger, but if next season proves to be successful, no Arsenal fans will be complaining.

AW is preparing to fail….again. As an Arsenal fan, I am very worried about his stubonness. Remember the New Castle game. How can a manager of a top class team accept that kind of a thing and say we are not weak defensively. AW has totally run out of ideas.

Same crap every year. We cant defend set-pieces because our defenders are crap. We have no leaders no organisation. We need another striker with pace and ball winning midfielder in the flamini mould. Open your eyes wenger.

Well, if you choose not to read all the quotes, or to listen properly then you might get the impression Wenger said that he sint going to sign players. Then again, it wouldnt be a sensationalist article, if you actually reported the TRUTH now would it?

Arsenal never use the summer transfer window to improve. It’s always about trying to convince the best players to stay, selling one or two and getting one or two in. If the squad remains at it is, then get ready for another season of failure. And then next summer we can look forward to losing, Nasri, Cesc [if he doesn’t leave now], along with Van Persie and any other player who’s sick of just treading water, season after season. Wenger is so happy to make do instead of really going for it. That is why we will always fall short of actually being winners.

Look at United FFS. They won the league, were in the CL final and have strengthened very well already and are still looking to add another top player. It’s f**king embarrassing when you compare the two sides at the moment.

mr. Wenger you would have made it clear long time ago dat you are interested in turning arsenal into academy for monetary purposes. I believe u also have a share in dat club so dis is part of u were working for. I DON’T BLAME U Trophy is de ultimate satisfaction of every player. My advise for our top players who realy want to make meaning out of their lives to plz find their career elsewhere.

If these quotes are true,it means Wenger is actually plotting his exit. With what happened last year, and he redused to kicking water bottles and looking a sad and disheveled agitated man on the side lines,he must be deluded to think that lily livered team will improve without bringing in some steel in that team. Why would MAN U with the same pedigree as Arsernal improve their team every season and Wenger holds on to broken dreams.MAN U won the league and are so busy in the market and a perenial flop like Wenger will say his defence of Djorou is good. HOW!

fans who trust this wenger and board are biggest fools. they are just interested about money only money.

We all knew that what Wenger said at the start about spending money on new players, he would go back on his word. There is only one thing that needs to be done and that is the Board need to show some guts and get rid now so that we can get a manager who can insert some fighting instinct into the team and also go out and buy new players for the ones that are not playing to their potential and get rid of the dead wood. Sell Fabregas & Nasri as they are dragging the whole of the squad down due to their want away attitude.

So now it’s all about wht the fans think, not what the team needs? Strange philosophy. I somehow feel it wouldn’t lead to no good.
@PATRICK: Djourou had just had a perfectly fine season, for the first time in years, so I don’t see why he should suddenly turn mediocre. How many players did ManU actually buy in, say, the last five years? I get the impression that it was less than the “Arsenal fans” demand of Wenger now. It’s not the fans’ expectations that matter, it’s the quality, the skill, the character that it takes to dare to win.
@Griff: ManU are buying becuause they have just lost a sizeable batch of players. Ever noticed the massive exodus from Old Traf? They released seven players from the 1st team squad (Arsenal – 3, including the ever-retiring Lehmann). They needed to come up with new ones simply because they have no backup options now. It goes to show that Ferguson isn’t such a brilliant manager as far as transfers are concerned. His current choices are also quite costly, because he isn’t so versatile as to come up with more than one name for a position. Of course, he can afford it, just as Wenger does, but does it mean it’s best for the team? I’m not so sure. Teams aren’t made through money and pep talk alone.

what ferguson wins speaks volumes of his ability as a great manager. wat you just said is so stupid and rediculous. UTD won the league and made it to the CL final. First thing ferguson does this summer is clear out the not so good and aged fringe players and replaces them with quality young replacements.

O SHEA gone PHIL JONES in … SCHOLES RETIRES … ASHLEY YOUNG in. VAN DER SAR retires DA GEA in … all those replacements are quality players.

But wenger sells an experience french international left back and replaces him with a 21year old inexperienced left back with an injury record that challenges diaby for time spent in treatment room. And i cant wait for it to backfire on wenger just to see wat his response is.

Arsenal fans are the biggest mugs in football because we always go into the summer with such hope that finally he will fix wat is so obviously broken. Its even worse wen they lie to us, saying we will do our business quickly, we will improve our defence, ,,,,,BULLSHIT,,,,,,,

Gold medal for bullshit talkin goes to mr wenger with ivan gazidas takin silver followed by the baord in the bronze position.

I’m so so fed up of reading these bullshit comments from Wenger. Ex-players can see it, current players know it and the fans have to put up with it, the defense needs strengthening!! Open your eyes for once and do something or it’s rinse and repeat for Arsenal next season.
