Battle For Left Back: Traore Looks The Better Option

By on July 29, 2011

Gael Clichy has been a servant at Arsenal for many years. I have every respect for him as a player and for his move to Manchester City. I wish him all the best. But I really do believe, that this switch will have a very positive effect on the Club.

Ever since Ashley Cole departed, Clichy has been Arsenal’s undisputed left-back; the position has never really been challenged. But this is exactly what the young boys at the club need. Kieran Gibbs had been Gael’s back up, and never really pushed to become first choice. Armand Traore has been offloaded to clubs on loan in the past, and not really been given his chance. Now they both have a chance to fight for their place, and improve as players. Everyone should agree that competition is great for a player, it pushes you harder. When two young players with vast amounts of potential go head to head, it really is a spectacle.

Admittedly, at the early stages of pre-season, I have to say that Traore looks the better of the two. He is amazing going forward, much like Gibbs, but has looked surprisingly solid when defending, unlike Gibbs. Gibbs’ vulnerability at the back really does let him down, because I believe he has the ingredients to be the next Ashley Cole, given he improves defensively. Another factor in the battle for left back is the fact Gibbs is very injury prone. Traore, however, never seems to be injured, another reason to back Traore.

VOdds

Anyway, Gael Clichy leaving is a GOOD thing. The younger players will prosper, develop and be given the chance they deserve! What do you think? Traore or Gibbs?

Not quite true, Traore was injured loads last season Italy and he was also injured last week costing him a place on the plane to Germany. That said i do not see many decent left backs about at the moment, people rate Baines, but i dont. Traore and Gibbs are already better than Enrique so he would not improve us other than adding depth. Personally, i think Koscielny and Vermaelen can offer enough cover if the young lads get injured. But in that case we must sign 2 Centre Backs. Forget Jagielka, i want Mertesacker and Samba. The 2 could play together against the likes of Stoke and team that pump the ball into the middle. They could also alternate alongside Vermaelen or Djourou and would allow Kos to become our new Eboue (play anywhere)

I my opinio i think i prefer traore to gibbs because of his vast experience and defenssive awareness. While gibbs is on the opposite side.

Traore is terrible, what games have you seen him where he’s played better than average?? I can’t recall any! Gibbs has made a number of outstanding performances and he has the English grit, Traore is scare to tackle and as such gets his timing all wrong.

I’d like to see Sagna Cahill Samba Verma, all are hard tackling and three are awesome in both attacking and defending corners….only my opinion!!

traore is not as terrible as u claim. he was originally a left wing being converted to left back.. that being said through out his time at arsenal he was never given the right chance except playing in carling cup matches. he is still young and as the author claims.. its alaways good to have a little competetion in order to thrive. if no other LB is signed i wouldnt mind seeing traore being given the position. he does a decent job and has looked rahter solid in preseason. whther he could transfer that form to a whole season is yet to be known but traore deserves his chance now more than ever and with giibs lurking on the sidelines it can only get better. using vermaelen as a left back i would say is a waste. sure he has played it a few times in his ajax days but why should we convert our best CB into a LB. thats just wasting his talents.

I saw Traore playing several times and he constantly made serious mistakes. Gibbs doesn’t look like more than a prospect so far. Maybe he will do well for a few games, but then when it matters he will fail us. If we want to compete for titles we need an experienced LB and Traore is not the solution.

It’s hard to take anyone who thinks Traore is anything other than absolutely dreadful seriously. When exactly have you watched him in pre-season? He’s played about 30 minutes. I’ve literally never seen any full back at Arsenal who is quite so bad at defending. He has literally zero chance of making the grade here. Gibbs, on the other hand, is quite good.

    Nonsense article.

Couldn’t dissagree with you more, Traore can’t defend to save his life, I think he should be converted to a winger as he played on the wing a couple of seasons ago for the last 3 games & looked useful & actually put in decent crosses. Think Kieran Gibbs could be a top drawer left back if he could stay fit & get enough hours on the pitch but sadly thats a big “if”

    Stupid article
Traore has shown nothing in 4 years to show he can make the grade as a defender. Bad positioning loose passing and despite his pace gets skinned in one on ones.
Reading here he’s the better option makes no sense he’s played half a game against Malaysia xi and green town. If he can’t look good against those he shouldn’t be playing at all

Gibbs is your typical English defender
absolutely clueless but Sagna is not much
better so Traore in place of Gibbs antime?

Traore for me all day! Gibbs has been exposed too many times durin pre season just like he did when given the chance last season. Yes Gibbs has had some good performaces but the guy gets caught at the wrong end of the pitch too much for my liking.

Has to be said though, neither are left backs…both played their junior, reserve or loan spell football in more forward positions in the left midfield. They are attacking lefts. To ask either to play defensively is suicide for the 1st team.

I have to note though that Traore, on his day, is pretty cool going forward, tricky and insanely quick…if he could learn to keep his head…

My answer is Gibbs but would prefer a defender there if possible.

AGREE 100&, Traore has looked so much better and 2 years ago when Clichy was injured and he played about 8 games he was solid and i prefer him 2 Gibbs atm, Everyone goes on about Gibbs potential but every game hes played in hes been average or made a mistake, the potential is amzing you can see glimpses but until hes consistent and inury free it has 2 be arman

i think but of them are the same sort of player, and thats why we have pre season to see how much they can cope. Personally i think their position for the diagonal ball is poor, tackling fair, man marking fair and interceptions fair, they have great speed so that sorts of help them out, with games they will definitely improve. I think the position in front of them is where the defensive woes lies.
If ryo gets his permit i think arshavin will be on the bench

Gibbs is terrible. I don’t know why he is even still being considered, he is basically like our defensive Denilson, whenever he is attempting to defend, it is a disaster, whenever he goes forward he leaves our defense exposed and he doesn’t get back in time. Plus, its not like his skills up front are any better, he just causes confusion, we already have attackers, he should work on his defending!

Having said that, Traore isn’t much better, but compared to Gibbs the difference is like heaven and Earth, we just need a proper LB, what we have just won’t cut it

I should make a video of all the high profile mistakes Gibbs has made compared to Traore lol. Gibbs is ok but many more mistakes than Traore but i think because he is english he is getting away with it.

Gibbs vs Man united: high profile mistake
Gibbs Vs Leyton Orient: high profile mistake
Gibbs this pre season: many mistakes
Traore this season so far: none(I know only 45mins)

Like Walcott because he,s English that,s
why Denilson and Bendtner can,t get any

Arsenal BACK FOUR 2011/2012 season will be: Centre backs:- Koscienly, Samba/Phil Jagielka/cahill and Johan J/Squillaci as back ups. Left back, Vermaelen while Traore and Gibbs both will be backups. Right back position: Sagna and Phil Jagielka in some big games if Sagna injury/suspend, Jehnikon will be a backup

Add Sakho/saphic/mertesacker/mexes and everyone arsenal have been associated with by the media yet.
Le Prof wont buy more than one CB this summer. And Djourou has been good last season.

Those rooting for Traore? Just watch MANYU against Arsenal. FA Cup Old Trafford. We lost by 4 to 0.

He has been crap for every game until Gibbs was given a chance where he did well except when he slipped against MANYU.

Traore was deputy to Clichy before Gibbs came along. He never played a full 90 minutes for Arsenal because he was always found out.

He was pencilled in to be sold to Benfica but refused because of his wage demands. Arsene dthen shipped him on loan and sale but at the end of the day Juventus decided not to buy.

I don’t think he’ll stay here beyond next summer.

for real lets judge the guy on a few games he played for us over 3 yrs ago lol the whole team played crap against Manu not just Traore. Even then you could tell the guy had something special and if he’s learnt how to defend while in Italy then he could be a great player for us this season. If not then we’re in trouble I think, Gibbs other than the odd spell going forward has looked crap.
Listening to TalkSport the other day their Italian correspondent was of the opinion that he’s defending has improved lets hope he’s right.

As someone without an opinion on either Gibbs or Traore, I find the comments totally confusing and contradictory. Wenger must see something in both these guys and unless he buys a more experienced left back, they should fight out the position between them. There is always Vermaelen to fall back on.

There nothing to write off about the 2 defenders, they are jst a waste to the team. we need a better substitute 4 the left back position. To me i prefer Gibbs to Traore, with the qualities and skills of Gibbs i think with time he will change 4 better as wenger usually says ‘I believe in future players’ And Gibbs is still a future player.
