Is Gary Cahill Actually Better Than Koscielny?

By on August 18, 2011

After watching the Newcastle game, Arsene Wenger will have been pleased with the brilliant display of messers Vermaelen & Koscielny. With Arsenal about to lose their inspirational captain Cesc Fabregas and the runner up in the PFA player of the season Samir Nasri, that leaves Arsenal with a gaping hole in the midfield.

However the money that the sales will generate, will give Wenger a £60Million ‘Warchest’. You can gurantee that the Gunners will break their transfer record, but if Wenger signs Cahill for £16million; that would help to make sure Squillaci never plays for Arsenal again (Which would be a cause for celebration if you are an Arsenal fan, and a sad day if you’re a opposition fan) and it would add depth to t help Arsenal cope with injuries in defence. But is Cahill better than Koscielny? In my opinion he’s not, many in the british media say Wenger has wasted £10Million on Koscielny; but he has only had 2 seasons of top division football under his belt, we can see when he plays with a Centre-Half  who can defend, he is consistently brilliant.

Arsenal need to improve their midfield, Arsene Wenger will focus his attetniton on signing a winger, Juan Mata is the player most Arsenal fans want in the team, and with him costing at least £22million, do Arsenal really need a £16million centre back?

If and when Arsenal sign a centre-half, will Wenger be buying that defender to be NO3 in the pecking order?  If he is Dann is the centre-half that ”The Professor” will sign to bolster the backline.

Arsenal need to buy players.. that is obvious but how many? Is what Wenger and Arsenal fans alike will be thinking. A Centre back is likely to brought in, but will Wenger break the bank for Cahill or pay a reasonable price for Scott Dann?

So now your saying Koscielny is better than Ferdinand and Vidic. Think people posting here need to get a grip on reality. The time will tell this season when Arsenal play the likes of Man Utd, Chelsea, Man City then we will see how the defensive pairing does. Cahill is far superior than not only Koscielny but Dann also. Dann is injury prone and for someone to say Birmingham had a better defence than Bolton last season if that was the case why did Birmingham get relegated? Be real Cahill although with not much International experience, did Jones, Smalling, Henderson etc. No the simple fact is Arsenal will probably miss out on Cahill as will not want to part with best part of 17m, buy someone less familiar with the Premiership and regret it later in the season. Cahill made 40 appearences last season isn’t injury prone which most of Arsenal’s fragile defence seems to be.

I quite like Arsenal but have to say I see you struggling this season unless key players are added in most positions.

the reason birmingham got relegated was due to his injure as he played less than half there games and koseincly is a more european cb as he reads and rsponds while english cb like cahill just responds

never have i heard so much rubbish in my life. Cahill can’t read the game and just responds?. And kos can read the game and respond? Now i do know some people haven’t watched cahill enough, silly comment, i really hope you buy dann as he is injury prone and would fit in nicely at arsenal. I do think arsenal require a world class striker and defensive midfielder along with another creative midfielder. Remember this though when cahill is an england starter, most prem winners have always had an englishmen at the heart of the defence. Man utd with rio, chelsea with terry etc.

Ok, I’m not going to be drawn into the ‘Kos vs. Cahill’ argument because I just haven’t seen enough of Kos to make a fair assessment. What is will say is this: Nationality aside, Cahill is a fantastic footballer. He’ll stand toe to toe with all but the best defenders in the league (i.e. the Vidic’s). His timing on the ground and particularly in the air is excellent. He is very occasionally caught on the back foot, but despite his size he has pace to burn so he can usually atone for an error. Were Cahill really excels is his composure on the ball, his dribbling and his range of passing. Not to mention his eye for goal. He loves to carry the ball out of defence and start (and finish) attacking moves. I always felt that if he was going to leave Bolton then I’d like to see him join Arsenal as he could really shine there due to his style of play. It seems like you guys are happy with Kos and the defence you already have. Good luck for the rest of the season.

Cahill is much much better right now but he is also more experienced in the premier league while Koscielny is still fairly new to it and could close the gap. We won’t be getting Cahill though this summer, when there is a chance we can sign him on a free transfer next year- as with Chamack before.

We need a creative midfielder-sneijder,gourcuff,juan mata.
    A centreback- cahill,mertesacker.
    A striker

Definitely need a creative midfielder, and the players you have chosen would be Arsenal’s best (but very optimistic) choice. I would have chosen all those players you cited, except one : Gourcuff

He is out of form, doesn’t play well, and is highly over-rated. You should see him play for Lyon, atrocious!!

Hahahaha, I wanna see your IQ…..

Cahill is the next big thing for England, he’ s been called to his national team…
Think, Koscielny is French, is there any chance to be called to his national side? Abidal, Sakho, Gallas, Rami, Kaboul… just think….

I agree with you about Cahill, but don’t think that Laurent Blanc wont reconsider his two centre halves. Sakho is inconsistent, Gallas hasn’t been selected once since Blanc took over, Kaboul is filling in for the injured Mexes.

You should also take into account that Clichy and Sagna are starters for the french team, adding Koscielny would be beneficial as they have all played regularly together.

koscienly is improving, but he is not in cahill’s class yet. he is also a rash tackler and is liable to give away penalties and free kicks.
One good game against a toothless newcastle isnt a anything to rave about either. Wenger wont pay the money and thinks he will get him cut-price later..say january. No chance as when the price drops the wage demands will increase. Expect chelsea to buy him and offer him more wages and at that time a team thats going places, leaving wenger once again losing out due to his hesitancy over the cost.

Look, I’m down with Bolton supporters sticking up for their guy, but the point of this whole thing is a thread injecting some reality into the section of Arsenal supporters who think that replacing Kos with Cahill or Jagileka will somehow ensure a magic clean sheet for every game, which is utter tripe. See the detailed Untold review: http://blog.emiratesstadium.info/archives/date/2011/07/03

I am not saying that acquiring good defenders wouldn’t strengthen out team, because of course it would, but the desperate sheep mentality I see amongst some Arsenal fans to scrabble around the defensively minded mid-table and lower table teams and pick their best defenders is pathetic. If we were talking a proven world class defender, like, say, Ricardo Carvalho four years ago, Nemanja Vidic or Martin Skrtel then I’d have to put my hands up and say…hey you’re probably right and these guys could teach Koscielny a thing or two.

I agree with the article where kos and vermaelen is a good combination. His almost there. We as arsenal fans should believe in him. Just focus more on CM and striker and we going to win at least carling cup and next yr will be invicible! Believe me my fellow gunners!

Yes Garry Cahill is not any better than Koscielny.. Hence why we should just buy the cheap scotty brown… Cz him and Vermalen is stil fragile and injury prone.. So we need a replacement who can get the job done.. and sit in the bench when they are fit.. Invest rest of the £52million on the midfield and the future of Arsenal

    Dann £8m, Samba £12m = £20m
    Cahill £17m???

You do the math! I would get Dann and Samba to addd depth to an ijury prone squad! Add, Hazard to replace Nasri and Zarate and i think we are good for this season! Ramsey, Wilshere, Frimpong, Song, Rosicky, Diaby can cover the midfield for thsi season!

amazing how much ppl underestimate Scott Dann – he is excellent in air; technically strong on the ball – has the best pass completion of all the noted centre halfs and is the youngest at 24; great value and probably most potential – Get Dann

THANK GOD SOMEBODY FINALLY REALISED THAT KOZZI IS BETTER THAN CAHILL:
    PLEASE WE DON’T WANT CAHILL,
    KOZZI:
In his 1st season in the English League, playing along side not just Djourou who was decent but Squillaci who was terrible, still managed to concede, only 43 goals compared to the 37 that Man U conceded.

Now with Vermaelen back and if we get Dann as back up to make sure Squillaci never plays again I am a 100% sure we would concede less than that,

    CAHILL:
With Bolton conceded 56 goals, season before that 67 goals, and before that 53 goals again, AND THAT IS THE MAN TO HELP US STOP CONCEDING GOALS, HE NEEDS TO HELP HIS TEAM 1ST, HE IS ONLY HYPED UP BECAUSE HE IS ENGLISH, AND THE MEDIA WANT THEIR PLAYERS AT A TOP CLUB, UPSON WAS PICKED AHEAD OF HIM FOR ENGLAND ENOUGH SAID.

    DANN:
1st season with Birmingham helped his team to conceding only 47 goals and coming 9th, 2nd season was going great until he got the injury and Birmingham failed without him, and still they manage to concede 58 goals AND WHAT DID THE SAVIOUR CAHILL CONCEDE 56 GOALS.

FOR ME KOZZI IS BETTER THAN BOTH OF THEM, AND WE SHOULD GET DANN AS BACK UP WITH DJOUROU TO KOZZI-VERMA,

UNLESS WE WANT TO GET SAMBA, JAGIELKA OR MERTESEAKER WHO ARE BETTER.

Koscielny is a very good defender, but we need a defender
who has more physical strength to fight against powerful striker like drogba

CRAZY ARTICLE. KO IS NOT A TOP DEFENDER,FULL STOP. WE NEED CAHILL TO PARTNER VERMALEEN. WE ALSO NEED A LEFTBACK

    August 19, 2011 at 4:11 pm

I think Kos and Vermalen complenments one another with their different strength. Vermalen is more physical and Kos is more cerebral. Getting Cahill would be great, because its going to be another long season, and depending only on Kos and Verm would be too much.

For all you guys that like laying out your fantasy Arsenal team, or listing your ideal signings I have bad news.

Juan Mata has signed for Chelsea for £28m. He will be presented on the weekend.

Guilem Balague confirmed on twitter and if it’s anything to do with Spanish, he’s the man in the know!!

    Another one slips away!!!

Arsenal future manager, you are spot on. I was on the fence with regards to Scott Dann but you have made me a convert. It’s crazy, but your thoughts on Koscielny are exactly my own. Cheers.

We’ve lost our 2 most creative players in nasri and fabregas and have our one of the top centre backs in the league ,vermaelen, avilable again. tv and koscielny is a very good cb partnership and with djourou providing decent cover i see no reason to spend big money on another centre back unless we suffer an injury crisis. Arsenal need to strenghten their attacking midfield options. arshavin and rosicky are passed it for me and have played no where near their potential in the last two years. that leaves walcott and gervinho as the only two viable options on either side of the front 3. rosicky is currently playing in the “Fabregas role” as the main creator in the midfield 3. i believe this is the position that wilshere will play in the not too distant future but in the mean time wenger should sign Jadson to play there as he can also play on the wing when it comes time for wilshere to take up the attacking midfield position. arseanl look set to sign m’villa which means that creative midfielders and wingers should now be wengers main targets.
