No Italian Job for Rafa

By Ross Mackiewicz.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez’s agent Manuel Quillon Garcia has once again denied that the Spaniard is set for a summer departure from Anfield. Fresh rumours have once again circulated that the Liverpool boss is set for a summer move to Turin and take over the reins at Italian giants Juventus, who have also experienced a turbulent season themselves after manager Ciro Ferreira was axed and a drastically dire run of form has left them with little hope of qualifying for next seasons Champions League.

Reports on Tuesday suggested that Garcia and Juventus officials met in Monte Carlo and agreed a four year contract for Benitez. However his agent is adamant that the claims are:

“Absolutely false”

“There is no agreement with anyone.”

Benitez himself was coy on his future, preferring to concentrate on this weeks match with Athletico Madrid and waiting to see who buys Liverpool from current owners Hicks and Gillett.

“The future? I just think about the next week, only of the sale of the club.

“I’m interested in who buys Liverpool. Resignation? I will have to wait for next week. I will talk to who will buy the club. We must wait.”

Meanwhile Benitez and his Liverpool players are preparing at Melwood ahead of their vital second leg Europa league clash with Athletico Madrid on Thursday night. The reds trail 1-0 from the first leg and anything less than a win will see their hopes of reaching a European final dashed.
