[PLAYER RATINGS] Borussia Dortmund 1-1 Arsenal: How The Gunners Got On…

On Tuesday we saw a different avatar of the Arsenal team. A little more of George Graham then the tippy tappy, most certainly in the second half after we manage to shake of the nerves during the first 30 minutes. Dortmund I must say are a really impressive team and it was admirable the way they took the game to us and yet Arsenal held on and almost won the game.

Even though we conceded late you can’t do much about that goal except wonder if you could have scored like that in that time. I’m proud of our performance. Before it was not convincing and below what we expected, but now we have become better, and to be honest ‘are getting there’…

Match Ratings-

Schezer– Fantastic. A reliable presence between the sticks and a fabulous save in the dying minutes to keep us level. Could not do a thing about the goal and I doubt if any other keeper could. 9

Kosher– A torrid first half. If not for some woeful finishing by the Germans we would surely have been behind as he clearly let Kagawa through on goal, playing him on. Made up though in the second half with a performance which reminded me of the game at the Emirates against Barcelona. 6

Mertersacker– Clearly nervy on the ball, athough getting the basics right. Needs more time to adjust and we were playing an impressive side to be fair to him. 5.5

Sagna– Fantastic. Clearly deserves to be the best right back in the premier league .Kept things tidy at the back without Theo to help out and was always there when he needed to be to avert danger. 8

Gibbs– Not seeing much of an improvement in him defensively . Left too much space for the Germans to exploit. Someone needs to tell him to adjust to the situation and not just keep bombing forward. 5

Song-We all rate him highly and he showed exactly why. World Class is what he is . Snuffed out danger when required to you and kept running and running and taking the pressure of the defenders. Thank you for being back Alex. Just don’t stamp on anyone anymore. 8

Arteta– Won fouls to slow Dortmund ’s game down and took the pressure of the gunners. Looked comfortable with ball though he didn’t do much with it but clearly wasn’t hassled by the pressure of the German midfield. 6

Yossi– Not much of an attacking force but then again the Germans were excellent at hounding our players. He is new and it will take him time but clearly put in his defensive shift. 6

Gervinho– He is like a fitter and quicker Diaby. Doesn’t pass when he needs to though I like his confidence to take on Players. He gives a more direct and aggressive approach and we need that. He certainly need to improve his decision making. Got two brilliant chances in each half and was unfortunate to trip in one of the occasions. 6.5

Theo– Was non-existent throughout the game and but gave a vital contribution in assisting Robin’s goal. Needs to work harder. 5

RVP– Made the goal by winning back possession with a brilliant tackle followed by a fabulous finish on his weaker foot. 7

Frimpong- NA

Santos- NA Debut match.

Must have been watching a different game:

    Song and Szczesny … 9’s.
Koscielny, Gibbs, Sagna, RVP … 8’s.
    Everyone else … 7’s.

Tuesday was a team effort. We were under pressure to perform in one of the cauldrons of football and came away with a result.

One step at a time – and this was a hefty stride. What more do you want?

You get rated a 5 for your ratings.

And you get a 4 for your ratings xD

Seriously though, Benayoun, Mertesacker, Arteta, Gervinho and Gibbs didn’t play all that well, 7 would be extremely generous for them.

Don’t know why I’m bothering to post here, but please! What would you rate the Barca, ManU and Citeh players who also drew against much weaker teams than Borussia Dortmund who won the Bundesliga last year? I do not understand Arsenal fans who constantly berate the team and its players…when they actually play better than expected. And their goal was not one we could have defended against.

Koscielny deserved much more than 6, surely. He was immense and had a great game. For some stupid reason he gets underrated all the bloody time!

1st time around, it is always difficult to be objective. I’ve just watched it again being able to stop, slow play and review. After reading the English newspapers, different blogs, etc – you can almost believe Arsenal lost the game.
Arsenal didn’t play better than BD nor did they play worse. A draw was about right. There was a lot of positives in the game. Song, Szczesny, Sagna were all excellent. Gervinho and v Persie were both very good. The rest did ok. Walcott wasn’t as involved as I’d like, both Koscielny and Mertesacker made a couple of mistakes, as did Arteta, Benayoun and Gibbs. Overall, as a team effort – well done.

Yes some of you are correct, IF BD had scored a goal on one of their chances, the assessments would have been different but that works both ways; IF Arsenal had scored on some of their chances, we would also have a different view.

I’m still a bit new to the Premiership teams, just started following last year, but I find the fans really interesting. A good display against the Bundesliga champions to earn a 1-1 draw, and only because of a late equaliser by the opposing team, earns more berating of the players’ performance, yet a horrible loss (you know what I’m talking about) has them cheering till the end and still backing the team.

    Gooners. You’re totally not pessimists.

-one more thing though, I thought Per should’ve done better than he has. True, he still needs time to adjust, but Dortmund are from his previous league. Played against them twice a season at the very least. Of all our players, he was the one who should know better how to deal with their players.

This rating should be based on the team NOT just individual players performances. Therefore, to go into one of the toughest stadiums in Europe, hold the reigning Bundesliga champs to a draw and defend like demons, the team merits an 8 in my view. They seem to have found the secret of playing away in Europe as they took all 3 points in Italy and a big point in Germany. I can see them meeting Barcelona again in the Nou Camp but this time, they could take the game, provided they gel as a team. This hasn’t happened yet but it is on its way.

good point last year under that pressure we would have conceeded a bucket load of goals plus we have stong players to come back TV5 and wilshire will add emensly to the team time to get positive we have three very winable games up next blackburn olimpiokos and bolton before the spuds and TV5 should be fit for them and hopefully wilshire with the new boys settled in we will hammer them
